That is not the reason. In every jurisdiction where they've raised minimum wage the opponents said prices would rise and it never happened. Minimum wage is still not where it should be, pay people a living wage and they have money to contribute to society, their health improves and they are less costly to health care, their kids do better in school and people get out of poverty, the real middle class actually grows instead of getting smaller like in the US.....

I tried to get out of construction and go back to school, took a minimum wage job in 2007, when I got my first weekly pay I thought they fucked up, there's no way I could pay my mortgage, my car, my gas, insurance, let alone raise kids and let them play sports etc.... I don't know how people do it. I quit after 3 months and went back to construction.....

@Ganda
18$ Can per hour would cripple small & med business in Ontario that are already crippled. As the gov't pays the employees to stay home nothing will improve.

@Barbarossa
I'm all for helping workers get paid a good wage. You have the Walmarts & the Amazons that pay minimum wage while suffocating med/small business. I think there should be tax breaks big time for the small guys. The big guys hardly pay any tax what so ever.

That’s exactly right , DJ ,
the big players are owning our politicians with large contributions, this needs to stop. Get money out of politics

& guess where that money is coming from...not the gov't workers that clearly cant tax themselves. All from small & med business that pay their share

It's a complicated subject, which is why I usually don't engage on these forums, some loose thoughts:
* We come from a society, only 120 yrs ago (which is the blink of an eye in human history) where the very, very few owned all of the wealth while the vast majority of people rotted away, basically Ancient Regime conditions. After WW1 and unions and more democratic voting changes there was a small redistribution of said wealth.
After WW2 and more societal changes yet, the redistribution became more pronounced and in the '60's we reached the most equatable distribution of wealth ever, even though it was still skewed very heavily in favour of the wealthy few, but at no point in history until then was the "middle class" as large as it was in the '60's, on a global scale even.
*Then the change happened, Eisenhower's heavy taxation of the wealthy was dialed back, we had oil crisis, Thatcher, Reagan, and the middle classes everywhere started dwindling, more and more of the total available wealth ended up in the hands of less and less people, a process that is still happening at an accelerated rate today.
*Raising min wage is not the small business' enemy, the enemy is Walmart, Amazon, Target, Home Depot, Tim Hortons, McDonalds etc... who buy in vast amounts and can sell for next to nothing BECAUSE they only have to pay min wage and can skimp on vacation pay, health benefits, sick days etc....And then they pay 0 taxes in the jurisdictions where they operate.
*Everybody was asked to pitch in during covid, share the load, do your part. You seen the big 6 banks' profits for 2020? Profits, not turnover or gross revenue or anything. Billions, all of them. It's sickening, you might as well call it blood money. When are they pitching in and doing their civic duty?
*My buddy Al is a small business owner with 3 employees and a student, before he was 40 he had his own place with pool, a $120.000 boat, a cottage at the lake, a place in Florida, atv's, snowmobiles, rental properties, a new car every few years and at least 2 vacations down south without fail. Two of his guys had to cab it in to work, none had dental or health benefits. Now he took risks, he borrowed money to start the business etc.. I don't begrudge him his lifestyle and I love the guy, but I do see the discrepancy on how he earned it. Something ain't right there.
* Unfortunately after covid, I don't see things changing for the better, the pie is still being divided in an extremely uneven way.
*End of rant.
