Well the keepers aint stupid they study tapes of the sides certain players shoot at ect if they shot straight everytime the keepers would just stand still and catch .

If you keep shooting straight on all penalties the keeper will know.
Keep shooting right most of the time keeper will take a chance.
Left footed player shoots to the right a lot.
It is a lottery. Need to shoot dfferently every time unless you can put it out of reach in the top of the net everytime.

Pirlo with a sneaky sneaky down the middle was class I used to this all the time on FIFA but truthfully Joe Hart set up was all wrong trying to put someone off didnt work at all and he dived the wrong way  every time but yeah penalties shoul dbe banned so England might actually stand a chance of getting through next time.

On top of that PKs are stresfull. Try running around for 120 minutes, billion of people watching, taking a penalty which is so easy in practice but here you will be your countrys most hated if you miss.
Hard part is not shooting the ball.

A Colombian player was killed when he came home for missing a penalty at the World Cup.
Luckily this is rare but imagine being hated by all of your countrymen.
Yeah, people say they forgive them but deep down they are hated.

Agreed that PKs are a terrible way to end the game.  Being good at PKs is hardly representative of how good of a team you are - luckily the better team won today anyway.  I don't understand why they don't just keep playing until a goal is scored?  They do it in hockey.  Sure, it would be pretty sloppy after another half hour but it seems a lot more fair.  Maybe even allow a new sub every 15 minutes of OT or something...

Not fair for the team progressing, ark. Huge advantage for the other team meeting up with that completely depleted team in the next game.

About missing penalties, I always hope it is the best player who misses, like Baggio in 94 or van Basten in 92...these players are legends anyway and can take it...Really hate it when a young/less known player misses.

I am curious as to how they pick who to shoot?  It seemed strange to me to pick Cole for England as he seemed to be off in the game.  I would assume you would want to go with the most confident guys on your team.  I know shit about Futbol and only watch it in these type of tourneys so pretty good chance I am way off.
The hardest part about a 2 week war is the first 4 years

the right team won, you shouldn't have bet england to qualify... my draw hit at +210 and I could care less who won on pk's... this is similar to the all the conspiracy NBA threads for people who lost on OKC.  If you had Italy to qualify you would be talking about what a beautiful thing PK's are

Agreed, they should allow unlimited substitutions.  Then there's no reason they can't keep playing until someone scores.

Penalty are the best way to finish the game when everyone is tired and can barely move after 120 minutes of raw intensity. It's very psychological, and it shows your mental strength.

That's what you have to realize about PKs : it is really easy to score one playing with your buddy in your backyard. Now try to do that after 120+ minutes of running, knowing that all your country is watching you and ready to kill you if you miss. You probably won't understand that, given that the most pressure you had in your life was "should i choose large or extra large menu" at McDo, but you can always shut up if you don't know shit about football :)

Why does everyone keep saying "let them play until someone scores a goal" you seriously think that in a 0-0 game they are going to all of the sudden (with them being exhausted mine you) start changing their formation and attempt to score a goal in a crucial game like this. I could almost guareente you the majority of the soccer fans would rather see a PK shoot out then a 9 hour game that might possible have a goal (which would probably end up being a squib goal or phantom goal at that). And don't say that if you kick it down the middle you score that's just dumb. The goalie could easily block those type of kicks why do you think they don't try it that often

I agree it may not be optimal but I think it's better than PKs.  How are PKs fair to the losing team?  They didn't really lose.  Plus, maybe the possibility of being exhausted next would press the issue when it starts getting to the two hour mark and beyond.  Who knows, it's easy to criticize a broken system when you don't need to make the alternative...

This thread is entertaining.  Taking the Yanks RL last night, I think he lost 2 wagers.  You'll get the books back this week but to say that shooting the ball staright in PKs is a guarantee goal is just asinine.  Just a little advice, if you don't understand the game then you should make ridiculous comments like this or you just come off as foolish.

And FYI, you may be from Texas but a lot of foreign countries refer to Americans as "Yanks."  It's even the nickname of the USA national soccer team.

Also, think about the injuries. Players ended a season of 50+ games, their bodies are already exhausted entering the tournament. Making them play 2 or 3 hours long games is dangerous and stupid, and it would be foolish to think it wouldn't impact the next games. Players would be completely dead, and the final would be a complete waste.
