Wanted to start a thread for those of you in a One and Done league to chime in and also hear my thoughts for the years first major.
GL to everyone and enjoy Masters week.
At the beginning of the year I thought the Masters pick would be a no brainer with Jordan Spieth. With his 2,1,2 record the last 3 years it seemed too ez. However, I watched him closely in Houston last week and at the Match Play and his ball striking has been TERRIBLE. While he does have the course history, I can't see him making up for his bad approach shots in one week. His putter will bail him out at times but his form is not there to endorse a pick with. Top 10 is likely but certainly not a given.
Here is my short list for a One and Done pick this week:
Dustin Johnson - Form is obviously there. His course history is trending up (4, 6, mc, 13). Short game is the best it's ever been for him. My only pause is to save him for the US Open when it's going to be the biggest purse and longest track in Tour history.
Rory Mcilroy - Career Grand Slam on the horizon? You know he wants it baaad. Weather on Thurs/Fri look to be rainy/windy which only helps his chances even more. If he can get rid of the one bad round he seems to have every year, this is his tournament to win. If I don't use him this week it would definitely be at the PGA at Quail Hollow which he owns the course/tournament record.
Rickie Fowler - Really warming up to him with his play this year. 4 top 10's with a win at the Honda. The stats are all there for him to perform well here. #2 in total strokes gained, #2 in total driving, #3 in scrambling. Last year's 1st round 80 gave him no chance to recover and missed the cut, but he was 12th in 2015 and 5th in 2014.
Justin Rose - 9/9 here with 8 top 25's and 4 of them being top 10's. He's not flashy but is as steady as they come tee to green. His only downside is obviously the putter. All he has to do is make a few putts and he'll be right there on Sunday.
Phil Mickelson - Lefty has been playing solid golf this year and has 3 green jackets to show his affinity for this place. His driving has been a little spotty, but no one can touch his short game prowess and knowledge of the greens at Augusta. If I don't use him here I would probably save him for St Jude where he always plays well against a much weaker field.
That's it for now. Let me know your thoughts and who you would pick as a one and done. Hopefully we can all benefit with each other's opinions.
