Regardless of who the Administration appoints for this position, it is going to be a difficult one to pass through the Senate.

Obama seems to prefer Senate appointments for certain high ranking diplomatic positions (you can disagree with that depending on perspective, but I think that it is why he likened a Senate VP choice and Senate SOS). Following this track I would think that Senator Kerry would make a strong choice for this. (1) He is well liked by the Senate regardless of partisan ties. (2) He has served (and is the Chairman) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. (3) Has been involved in diplomatic missions and decision making for over 30 years. (4) The 2004 election has largely passed over the minds of most Americans and the arguments against his candidacy for president (i.e. Swift Boat).

If you go back and watch John Kerry's speech at the DNC in September he spoke primarily about foreign policy and, to me at the very least, seemed as if he was auditioning for the position.

Still upset that Obama won slim? You must have lost a bundle. You have some inside info from Rove  or was it Limbaugh?

A good source told me it will be Rice. I would take her (or anyone else for that matter) over Kerry.

I would like to see Huntsman, whose name has been thrown around recently.

I dont think Rice should get the job. I prefer John Kerry, but picking him for a cabinet position would be the same as saying welcome back to the senate Scott Brown.

Exactly.  Dems just got that seat back and can't risk it at this time.

Sooooo instead of putting who you feel is the best man for the job you would rather put somebody less competent so the party doesn't lose a senate seat?

Interesting, I hadn't thought of him as a possibility yet. Selecting him as SOS would show a symbolic sign of bipartisanship - which may be only a symbol but it is something. I also like Huntsman and have said for months that if he would have been the nominee I would have truly struggled in determining who I was voting for.

My only question is if his experience as Ambassador in China qualifies him enough to be Secretary of State. I do not know much more about his background besides the fact that I agreed with him a lot during his short presidential campaign, on domestic issues.

I personally don't see Kerry being offered the spot, due to the Senate political repercussions already outlined. Huntsman is a great selection, if he would be willing to serve under Obama once more.

Susan Rice looks to be the favorite, but she will get skewered by Republicans over the Libya issue. GOP Senators Kyl, McCain, Graham, Barrasso, DeMint, Rubio and Corker have already indicated their reservations about her.

Don't sleep on Tom Donilon. He is respected by Obama.

Huntsman is a great selection, if he would be willing to serve under Obama once more.

EXCELLENT "outside the box" selection. IF Huntsman had been the Republican nominee, there is a VERY good chance that we would have a President Huntsman now.

Bobby Jindal is correct. the GOP needs to "stop being the stupid party"

I'm with you guys on Huntsman. He was the only candidate that I gave money to. Perhaps his best line (and most prophetic) was when he said that everytime the GOP answers a question, they are alienating a group of voters.

By all accounts, Kerry is a 'my way or highway' kinid of guy which could never work at State (and Kerry is a royal prick). Maybe as Sec of Defense. The reality is that seat won't be lost and even if it is, the numbers really don't matter at this point.

I agree on Rice. Her role in Libya will lead to lots of headaches. Perfect time to have a Repub.
