Now this I agree with.....we are producing a bunch of test takers not critical thinkers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday will free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned.

If it makes you feel any better, most days we aren't producing either of them.

Why stop at 10 states?

If it's a failure, why not kill the entire act?

What's with the preferential treatment of certain states?

I'm sure he and his administration mean well, but this won't sit right with many.

If you read the article, these states applied for it. I don't see where that is "preferential" treatment.

Um... I guess you missed the part where it said New Mexico also applied for the waiver but was denied, and up to 28 states have indicated interest in having the act waived.

Today is an admission by the Obama administration that the No Child Left Behind act is flawed.

If the administration knows that 28 states have shown interest in getting a waiver, why not kill the act entirely?

Why grant waivers to 10 states, but not New Mexico?

This is politics at its worst.

Today is an admission by the Obama administration that the No Child Left Behind act is flawed.

If the administration knows that 28 states have shown interest in getting a waiver, why not kill the act entirely?

Why grant waivers to 10 states, but not New Mexico?

This is politics at its worst.

Or perhaps it is because the state's (like mine by its own admission) have not made an adequate proposal for how the testing portion will be replaced once NCLB is eliminated.

Maybe it was just your argument at its worst.

Well I don't pretend to know ALL the facts DJ...

but on the surface, this certainly looks like dirty politics.

Why was New Mexico not granted a waiver? Because they don't have a proposal on how to replace the testing?

When applying for a waiver, States had to make certain proposals. NM did not qualify, but no doubt it will.

Now you're beginning to see the light !

No Don, I just see the grey areas where alot of ppl view the world as black and white or D vs R. That is one very BIG problem with our country.

I can pick alot of his other policies apart (and I do) but this one I think is a step in the right direction. Now if he would take on the teachers union....THAT would be BIG news

Why ? How about making the administrators responsible that negotiate with these unions? After all they can cave to these unions with little consequences.

Thats a good point. But since so much federal money (our money) for education goes back to the states Obama could take the lead on the issue. Afterall its the Feds who pass down the mandates about who, what and where do to with education in general.

My town spends an enormous amount of money on education and every year the budget goes up and up and up. When BOF recommends cuts the BOE cries about teacher layoffs. Its a vicious cycle and we go round and round and round and the budget goes up and up and up. When the town was facing a budget shortfall they asked all town employees to "share the sacrafice". The only ones who said HELL NO were the teachers union.

I agree.  School was definitely not a challenge for me because I went to a public high school, junior college, and university.  The smart kids are not challenged and their potential is the thing that is left behind to wait for the dumb kids.

My understanding of no child left behind is that it was designed to teach in terms of benchmarks...

so getting everyone to certain standard would result in funding and students at a school not making those benchmarks would lose funding...

so teachers were taught to teach towards the kids meeting minimum standards and not to get kids to excel beyond that as that would not be cost effective or a good idea financially for the school...
