Florida law targeting Facebook, Twitter is unconstitutional, U.S. appeals court rules
A three-judge appellate panel on Monday ruled that a 2021 Florida law targeting social-media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter unconstitutionally restricts the companies’ First Amendment rights.
Monday’s decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld most of a preliminary injunction imposed in June by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle.
“Put simply, with minor exceptions, the Florida government can’t tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it,” appellate Judge Kevin Newsom wrote in a 67-page unanimous opinion joined by Judges Gerald Tjoflat and Ed Carnes.
Myth is that big tech is censoring right wing propaganda. Banning white supremacists isn't censorship. It is accountability against hate speech. Claims stating otherwise are misguided or a distorted understanding of how free speech works.
Absurd that Florida and republican states are banning books on critical race theory and social justice. Banning such books is teaching kids that not being racist is more dangerous than demonizing people of minorities. Instead shouldn't dangerous replacement theory be banned?
Senate Republicans block domestic terrorism prevention bill
Washington (CNN)
Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked a bill designed to combat
domestic terrorism from advancing in a key vote. The vote comes
as lawmakers are under intense pressure to take action in the wake
of multiple recent episodes of horrific gun violence.
At least 10 Senate Republicans would have needed to vote with
Democrats to overcome the 60-vote threshold imposed by the filibuster.
Seeing that the measure would not surpass the filibuster threshold,
senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer changed his vote from an
"aye" to a "no" at the end in a procedural move to be able to bring
the bill back up again in the future if he wants.
The bill passed the Democratic-controlled House last week
following a tragic mass shooting at a supermarket in a predominately
Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York.
But Republicans have pushed back against the measure put forward
by Democrats, describing it as unnecessary.

But Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott was LOUDLY booed as he approached
the makeshift memorial at the elementary school where 19 children
and two teachers were killed last week in a mass shooting.
The community has become increasingly critical of the Republican
governor’s stubborn defense of easy access to guns, including
assault-style rifles like the kind used in the school shooting.
Abbott joined those gathered at the site seconds after Biden and
first lady Jill Biden arrived to applause and cheers. The Bidens,
both tearful, could be seen talking to and hugging school officials.
A lawyer for the 2016 Clinton campaign, Michael Sussman, was acquitted on a charge of lying to the FBI about his motives for bringing the bureau research allegedly linking Donald Trump to Russia.
After 3 years investigating Sussman, Durham got smacked down by the jury in a matter of hours.

The Justice Department on Monday charged the head of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, and four other leaders with seditious conspiracy in the January 6 US Capitol attack, escalating the criminal case against the far-right extremist group.
These are the most aggressive charges brought by the Justice Department against the Proud Boys, and are the first allegations by prosecutors that the group tried to oppose by force the presidential transfer of power.

The attorney discipline arm of the DC Bar has brought a case against Rudy Giuliani for pushing unsubstantiated election fraud accusations in a Pennsylvania federal court on behalf of Donald Trump after the 2020 election.
The disciplinary office filing, called a charge, further puts Giuliani's status as a lawyer in jeopardy. Giuliani had already been suspended from practicing law by the New York bar as that office also investigates his election fraud efforts on behalf of Trump in court.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told CNN that Russian President Vladimir Putin has underestimated both Ukraine’s resistance and the unity of the NATO military alliance.
“He [Putin] has made a big mistake; he totally underestimated the strength of Ukrainian armed forces, the courage of Ukrainian leadership and the Ukrainian people, and he also underestimated the unity of NATO and partners in providing support to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told CNN’s chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour Thursday.
Speaking from the NATO Madrid summit, Stoltenberg said that Putin had failed in achieving his objectives when it came to weakening the NATO alliance.
