Study says 260,000 COVID-19 cases could be tied to Sturgis rally
USA Today A study by a California research group estimates that the Sturgis motorcycle rally led to more than 260,000 coronavirus cases in the month following the event.
Researchers from the Center for Health Economics and Policy Studies at San Diego State University published their findings Saturday in a 63-page report.
The estimate is dramatically more than the number of cases tied to the rally reported by both the South Dakota Health Department and the Associated Press.
"Even though the event benefited South Dakota economically, the majority of the health cost is being borne by the rest of the country," Andrew Friedson, one of four authors of the study, told the Argus Leader on Monday.
Meanwhile, Gov. Kristi Noem - who actually encouraged everyone to join the motorcycle rally -with NO masking orders - on Tuesday said the study was "fiction," and she criticized the honest journalists who reported on it.

The US needs 200 million tests a month to reel in Covid-19 pandemic, report says
By Theresa Waldrop and Maggie Fox, CNN Wed September 9, 2020
(CNN) The US should be performing as many as 200 million Covid-19 tests every month well into next year to have any chance of controlling the pandemic, experts say in a new report. That number is far beyond the country's current capacity, according to the report released Wednesday by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy. "The U.S. will likely need very large numbers of all types of Covid-19 tests well into 2021 to contain outbreaks while returning toward normal activity, with a particular need for more screening tests that have very fast turnaround times," the report reads. Public health experts across the country have for months said testing will play a critical role in helping to reel in the pandemic. Source: https://tinyurl.com/y5ya5rma

Another 884,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week
CNN The number of claims filed was unchanged from the prior week. That said, the headline number only counts claims for regular benefits that not everyone who lost their livelihood due to the pandemic has access to. That's why claims for benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Asstistance (PUA) program, that help workers like independent contractors, are so important. First-time claims under the PUA program totaled 838,916 last week, up from the prior week. Meanwhile, 13.4 million American workers filed claims for unemployment insurance for at least two weeks in a row.

Normal life may not be back until near the end of 2021
Amanda Watts, CNN Fri. September 11, 2020
"If you're talking about getting back to a degree of normality which resembles where we were prior to Covid, it's going to be well into 2021, maybe even towards the end of 2021," Fauci said Friday.
Fauci has said repeatedly that it's possible at least one of the vaccines being tested could get emergency authorization from the US Food and Drug Admin by the end of this year or early next year. But it won't be available to everyone immediately.
"By the time you mobilize the distribution of the vaccinations, and you get the majority, or more, of the population vaccinated and protected, that's likely not going to happen to the mid or end of 2021," he told MSNBC.
Young people may think they are not going to get dangerously ill, and get careless, Fauci said. "But what they forget is their societal responsibility to not propagate the outbreak because if they get infected, they're likely going to infect someone else who then might infect someone who really is vulnerable and will have a serious severe consequence."
And people are spreading misinformation, making the virus even harder to fight.

Israel approves another lockdown as Covid-19 cases surge
From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Amir Tal
Israel approved a second general lockdown on Sunday evening as coronavirus cases surge across the country. The lockdown, which is expected to start Friday afternoon, will see the country return to many of the same severe restrictions of the first lockdown back in April.
Schools, restaurants (except delivery), and entertainment venues will all close, as well as other businesses, for an initial period of three weeks. The public sector will operate with a limited workforce, while private sector businesses can operate as long as non-employees do not enter the workspace.
People will be required to stay within 500 meters of their home. Emergency services, pharmacies and food stores will remain open. Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 20 people, while indoor gatherings will be limited to 10.

WHO chief scientist says pre-Covid life may not return until 2022
From CNN's Jacqueline Howard
It might not be until 2022 when the world can begin thinking about returning to "pre-Covid" life, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, chief science officer at the World Health Organization in Geneva, said Tuesday.
"We're looking at 2022 at least before enough people start getting the vaccine to build immunity. So for a long time to come, we have to maintain the same kind of measures that are currently being put in place with physical distancing, the masking and respiratory hygiene," said Swaminathan, speaking to reporters during a virtual meeting hosted by the United Nations Foundation.
"Those will have to continue after the vaccine starts getting rolled out, because we need 65% to 70% of the population to have immunity before you will start seeing a dramatic reduction in transmission of this virus," Swaminathan said. "We also don't know how long these vaccines will protect for — that's the other big question mark: How long does immunity last? And it's possible that you will need a booster."

More fallout from trump's FAILURES with the pandemic...
North Carolina game against Charlotte canceled due to COVID-19 quarantines
The decision to cancel was made as a result of a depleted roster due to quarantine following Charlotte's COVID-19 contract tracing protocols.
Charlotte reported three positive cases of coronavirus among football players during the past two weeks. Fourteen-day quarantining of players who came into contact with those who tested positive has hit the 49ers' offensive line especially hard.

Dual disasters: How climate change is worsening wildfires and hurricanes
USA TODAY "We've always known that climate change would make extremes more extreme on all sides of the ledger. It's counterintuitive to some people that global warming can amplify drought and heavy rain, but it's simply physics," he said.
In the West, climate scientists say rising heat and worsening droughts in California consistent with climate change have expanded what had been California's autumn wildfire season to year-round, sparking bigger, deadlier and more frequent fires like the ones we've seen this year.
The role that climate change played in wildfires in California seeped into the political realm earlier this week. Though government officials and scientists identified climate change as the primary culprit behind the intense wildfires, President Donald Trump insisted during a briefing in Northern California on Monday that "forest management" is more to blame.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, told him forest management is an issue, but"climate change is real, and that is exacerbating this."
And as for hurricanes, scientists also say global warming is making the strongest of them, those with wind speeds of 110 mph or more, even stronger. Also, warmer air holds more moisture, making storms rainier, and rising seas from global warming make storm surges higher and more damaging.

Chiefs fan who attended game tests positive for Covid-19 and now everyone who sat near them is in quarantine
The Kansas City Health Department said the individual that tested positive watched the game from the group's box in the lower level of the stadium and tested positive the following day. The positive test has prompted the Kansas City Health Department to direct 10 people there to quarantine after potential exposure to the coronavirus. The Chiefs were one of the few teams in the NFL that allowed fans into its stadium in Week 1.

The stopgap measure that is being bargained over would extend government funding from now until December 11. Failing to negotiate a deal could lead to a government shutdown, with nonessential government functions being unavailable for the public.
After Trump started a trade war with China, China responded by imposing tariffs on soy and other staples; farmers have lost billions of dollars in exports and thousands of farms have closed as a result, despite government aid. During a campaign rally he held in Wisconsin,Trump promised farmers they would receive $13 billion more in aid.
According to The Washington Post, Pelosi — displeased with the addition — told The Washington Post, “We have serious concerns about giving President Trump a blank check to spread political favors.
