Sweden reported 1,614 new cases in the past 24 hours.
The Swedish record was set on Tuesday with 3,180 new cases,
according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Note:  With just 10.1 million pop. compared to U.S. 331 million pop. this means
Sweden is 33 times smaller.  But they had 3,180 covid cases on Tuesday.
That is effectively the equivalent to almost 100,000 cases in the US.
That gives indication of how bad the virus is now super-spreading in Sweden!
Indeed most of Europe is struggling in their second wave, and now
economies are slowing significantly as well.

Ironically, Sweden is one the few countries, if anyone else, took the Covid-19 herd immunity route. And Mr. Donald J Trump was talking about "herd mentality" just few days ago. 

Poland reports record number of cases
as government mulls border closures

Poland reported 13,632 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the country’s highest number
since the pandemic began and more than a 50% increase on Monday’s 7,482 cases.

The daily case count on Friday hit 77,289, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
That's the second-highest number of cases reported in a single day since the pandemic
began. The highest day for new infections was on July 16 with 77,362 cases.

More than 41,000 people were hospitalized across the country.
This is the highest level of nationwide hospitalizations since Aug 20.
The number of people hospitalized has increased by 33% since October 1.

Deaths are also creeping upward, with 856 on Thursday, Johns Hopkins says.
The 7-day average of deaths continues to climb and is up to 763.
That is the highest level of average weekly deaths in a month.

Minnesota reports three Covid-19 outbreaks
related to Trump campaign events in September

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting three Covid-19 outbreaks
related to Trump campaign events held in the state in September.

At least 23 cases have been traced to outbreaks occurring at rally events in
Bemidji on September 18, a speech held by Vice President Mike Pence on
September 24 in Minneapolis, and another rally held by President Donald
Trump on September 30 in Duluth, the department said in an email to CNN.

US continues to break records
as COVID caseloads rise across the country

As 44 states report rising caseloads in the latest week, the U.S. recorded
489,769 COVID-19 cases in a week setting another bleak record for the country,
a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.

The death rate has also edged back up to about 800 Americans per day,
a level not seen in more than a month.

In the latest week, 5,587 people died.

In comparison, 5,449 American service members 
have been killed in combat in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria since 2001.

Wisconsin vs. Nebraska Canceled
After Badgers Pause Activities Due to COVID-19

The University of Wisconsin announced Wednesday that it is suspending all activities
for its football team for at least seven days, meaning its scheduled game against
Nebraska on Saturday will be canceled.

A statement from Wisconsin Football said that 12 people within the
football program have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past
five days, including head coach Paul Chryst.

Wisconsin reports worst day of pandemic yet
with 64 deaths

Wisconsin reported its most dismal coronavirus numbers yet Tuesday
as state health officials urged residents to leave home only when
absolutely necessary and warned the crisis would continue escalating.

There were 1,385 people hospitalized due to the virus in Wisconsin,
including 339 in intensive care units. Both were all-time highs.
Hospitalizations have seen rapid, unimpeded growth for the last five weeks,
straining short-staffed health care systems across the state.

"This is no longer a slow-motion disaster," said Gregory Poland,
director of the vaccine research group at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
"This is a disaster in warp speed. And it's maddening to me as a physician
because a whole lot of people have died and are dying."

Double-dip recession risk is real

Surging coronavirus infections will slow growth this fall and winter.
Hotels, restaurants, movie theaters, airlines and other hard-hit businesses
can't fully recover when the pandemic is worsening.
Some economists even fear the economy will begin shrinking again,
setting off a double-dip recession.

The failure of Congress and the Trump administration to reach a
stimulus deal means more small businesses will surely fail, state and local layoffs
may accelerate and no stimulus checks are coming to alleviate the pain for
consumers anytime soon.
"Without further fiscal aid until 2021, a poorly managed health situation
and election uncertainty could make for a long winter," Gregory Daco,
chief US economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in a report Monday.

Germany will impose wide-ranging lockdown measures from Monday
in an attempt to slow down the spread of the coronavirus,
its government decided on Wednesday night.

Belgium, which is to send patients to Germany for treatment as hospital
admissions soar, will impose sweeping new lockdown measures for six weeks
starting Sunday night.
Belgium has the second highest number of infections per 100,000 people
in the European Union and UK, after the Czech Republic.

The hotel industry
may not recover until 2023

New York (CNN Business)
In a worrisome stat for hotel companies, year-over-year revenue per available room,
which is a closely watched metric for gauging hotel health,
has decreased 50% in 2020.
S&P forecasts that will rebound slightly in 2021, but will still remain between
20% and 30% lower compared to 2019.
A full recovery to pre-Covid levels isn't expected for another few years.
