I follow. Rarely post... I lived in San Diego in early 90’s... met a guy in Tijuana... at one of sports books. I was at table next to him and I said.. crap.. how do ya win at this game... he leaned over and handed me a ticket and said... go cash this and come back and talk to me... I cashed it.. was 1,000$ to win on a horse... paid 14.00.... I brought him 7,000$... he sat by himself.. no program.. no studying.. he had sheet with horse names and jockeys that they give to all.... and once a month or so... I would walk by his table.. and just say.. ya got anything... if it was even money winner he’d just look at me and say naw.... but on occasion he’d give me one... last time I went ... he was there... I asked again and he gave me a pic 3 at evening golden gate... he said , for example.. play the 1,2,3... and just in case... play the 1 2, 2 3, with 3 4... it ran the original way he said... 1,2 ,3... and paid 400+ ... to sum it up... he knew the winner of the 7th race at Santa Anita ... which wasn’t going to run for 4-5 hrs... he gave me 4-5 picks over the years.. I ended up moving back to Colorado in 1994...never saw him again....he was not young....looked an old mob guy if I had to guess ..... he didn’t like giving me picks.. but would on occasion... he sat by himself and never studied a thing... this has changed my perspective on horse racing for sure.... changed how I view sports a tad as well. In my view this is because these sports are fundamentally flawed in the modern world, as in they have evolved to a point where they rely on referee involvement throughout the game, and very often on multiple occasions that materially affect the outcome
Eg soccer can have a referee award 20 free kicks but the unstructured nature of the game is that it can often have no bearing on the game. However in NFL in most games the flags, or lack of, steer the outcome in so many ways
Basketball even worse because at the end of the game every foul call leads to an outcome on the scoreboard not just field position
