My thoughts on todays game and the entire team as a whole over the last 3 seasons during the Mark Sanchez, Rex Ryan era.
Starting with todays game and this season:
A classic Jets performance, the Giants are not a very good team and in the NFC east you dont have to be this year. Eli Manning was horrific, he mad an 11 yard pass that went for 99 and effectively changed the game due to poor tackling on behalf of Cromartie. But Eli has the weapons and the ability to make the big play more consistently then Sanchez does at this point in time. Tom Coughlin is completely outclassed by Rex Ryan as a coach. Rex Ryan is one of the top 5 coaches in football; hes turned the Jets defense into one of the best and most consistent year in and year out, if you watch Jet games the defense does all they can for so long and ultimately the offense leaves them out to dry time and again. The Jets offense makes a mistake and it snowballs into the offense panicking and Sanches forcing passes, turning the ball over, and leaving the defense out to dry.
How many passes hit Dustin Keller in the face? How many times did Sanchez hold the ball to long and take a sack, instead of throwing the ball away. These are mistakes a 3rd year QB should not be making anymore; Sanchez's awareness needs to improve.
For some reason the Jets philosophy with respect to Sanchez changed this year; they tried to force the issue and turn and him into something he's not; a gunslinger, he's best as a game manager, and this teams success has come from running the ball, playing defense, protecting the ball on offense and relying on Sanchez to make the big throws a handful of times a game; look no further then last years wildcard game against Indianopolis. If you watch that game its a blueprint for success with the Jets skill set.
When the Jets commit to the run, which they rarely did this year, they are a tough team to beat. We only saw glimpses of the Jets team we came to know over the past two seasons. The Jets philosophy seemed to shift into forcing Sanchez to throw the ball more then he's comfortable with and this philosophy culminated agianst the Giants today as Sanchez threw the ball 59 times and completed 50 percent. When did the Jets become this team? Sanchez is not Drew Brees, Manning, or Brady, and depsite how much this league has changed into a passing league there's still a place for teams that run the ball, control the clock and play defense. I would argue that these teams are the most consistent and toughest teams to beat day in day out. Look at the Steelers and 49ers. Alex Smith a very mediocre QB is on an 11-4 team because Harbaugh understands what he can ask of Smith and what is required from his team in the other facets of the game to compliment Smith and put his team in a winning position. The Steelers can throw Charlie Batch in the game and pound the ball and play defense and dominate a team 23-0.
Mark Sanchez is simply killing the Jets, but I'm not giving up on him yet. I think Schottenheimer needs to go ASAP, this team NEVER throws the ball down field until they are trailing late. Mark Sanchez's inconsistency during his 3rd season, with 2 significant playoff runs under his belt is cause for major concern, the offense needs a complete revamping, they need to draft young RB's and wideouts, Sanchez had very little weapons to work with; Plaxico was terrible this season except for a few red zone possesions other then that he was a liability and a none factor for 58 of 60 minutes a game. Holmes is aging and not a legit 1 reciever, Keller is no longer a threat at TE, the running game is weak with Greene, they need fresh legs. Overall the offense doesnt have near enough to compliement the defense.
Hopefully the stars align and the Jets make the playoffs, but honestly they don't deserve it. Hopefully we see the Jets make some off season moves to beef up the offense and give Sanchez and the defense a shot.
