Score another victory for the Colts. Before the season even starts.
Crying and whining by Peyton Manning in particular and the Colts in general have forced the NFL to adjust its new rule about the positioning of its referees. The umpire, says the league, will now be positioned 12 yards (not the 15, as was used in the exhibition season) from scrimmage. This will enable the Colts to snap the ball more quickly in their-no-huddle offense and catch teams off guard as they try to make substitutions.
Moreover, officials will now have the discretion to issue a warning before enforcing the 5-yard penalty for an illegal snap. Clear violations, the memo said, will continue to be penalized without a warning.
So basically the Colt get pretty much what they want, which is a massaging of the rules to help them win. And the NFL gets what it wants -- silence from Bill Polian at the next Competition Committee meeting.
It's a win-win, except for the other 31 teams when they play the Colts.
If' it smells familiar, it is. The last time the Colts sobbed about the rules (publicly, at least) was when the Patriots were spanking them by being physical with Colt receivers. The next season Diva wideouts had the protection of a league edict requiring stricter enforcement rule disallowing contact with receivers beyond 5 yards from the line of scrimmage.
I liked it better when the Colt just pumped in crowd noise to disrupt the opponents' signal-calling.

Amen to this thread. The NFL loves the Manning family like Peter loved the Lord. Eli would be Rex Grossman already if his name wasn't Manning. MVP of that SB, wtf? When he's expected to carry the team, he's awful unlike his brother.
In the end, all this help Peyton has received, he has 1 championship and it was against Rex Grossman. And some think he's the best ever. Hilarious. 5-10 qbs better than him.

I agree with the rule change as well. I hate the fact that it was the Colts that were bitching about it...but the NFL should hire 20 and 30 year old's to do the damn job instead of the old fuckers they have now who can't get out of the way. I can't imagine there aren't former college or NFL players who can't play anymore because of injury or whatever that wouldn't be able to do that job perfectly...and having a former player as a referee would help because they have a better insight to the ins and outs of the game.

If you can't stay with the evolution of the quarterback position and the game, get yourself some tights and try some Medieval festivals. They probably run through the winter as well.

I've been saying this all along for many years. Imagine if these guys officiate soccer games and not the younger more athletic guys. Here is what the requirements are for becoming an NFL official according to NFL.com.
We expect our candidates to have a minimum of 10 years of experience in officiating football, at least five of which have been on a varsity collegiate or other minor professional level.
Our candidates must be in excellent physical condition and belong to an accredited football officials association or have previous experience in football as a player or coach.
Each applicant is requested to furnish us with a detailed copy of his or her your collegiate officiating schedule for the past three seasons, listing dates, schools, location of games, and positions worked.

That rule was totally moronic. If the clock is running and the ball is set, then anything goes. Why waste more of the actual play time. I agree with the ideas of younger refs and put equipment on them. Wtf, umpires wear all kinds of protection and NHL refs wear mandatory helmets. Goodell is a moron. And here is a good poll question. Who does the NFL blow more, the Manning family or the Kraft family of Brady and the cheating Belichik?

Cts - maybe the best regular season qb. 1 sb win with 2 appearances. Considering the love the league and the refs give the guy, he should've done more.

Ummm... I'm not sure if you noticed this, but Peyton Manning has shown no signs of slowing down at all. He still has a good 4-5 years left, and I'm not sure if you also remember that John Elway also won his 2 super bowl rings in his last 2 years. Peyton has plenty of time to win 1 or 2 more.
