The New England Patriots look to
close out the AFC East and return to being division champions as the
Jacksonville Jaguars cling to their slim playoff hopes as the two meet
in Foxboro.
For a team who were the Las Vegas
odds-on favorites to win it all, New England has had somewhat of a
trying season. With Tom Brady and Bill Bellichick, they are still
winning their share of football games but this is a team that has come
under scrutiny and criticism for a good part of the season. First there
was the accusation of favorable calls against Baltimore and then there
was a questionable decision to go for it on fourth down deep in their
own territory late in the game at Indianapolis which gift wrapped a
come from behind victory for Peyton Manning and the Colts. The reality
of it is, even with Randy Moss and Wes Welker, these just aren't the
same Patriots team that we grown accustomed to. The faces have changed
and I can't say based on their performance it has been for the better.
Still, New England will more than likely be hosting a playoff game as
all they need to do is win one of their last two games, something they
have already accomplished nine times this season. While they aren't
known for covering big numbers a home, the pats are pretty tough to
beat outright there as they haven't lost at home all season.
Two weeks ago the Jacksonville
Jaguars controlled their own destiny as far as participating in the
post season, now, they are on the outside looking in. The Jags have
dropped two straight and are also in deep trouble in most of the tie
breakers. Jacksonville has been a bit of a surprise this year but they
need to stop the bleeding in order to have any chance and they need to
do it immediately. Their backs are up against the wall. Jacksonville
played well and gave the Colts fits last Thursday but in the end they
just didn't have enough to hold back Peyton Manning. The Jacksonville
offense just doesn't score a lot of points, averaging under 20 per game
and they have trouble stopping the pass. Jacksonville has some holes to
fill this offseason.
New England is 4-0 against the spread
as a favorite of 3 1/2 to 10 points but they are just 2-5 against the
spread in games following a cover. Jacksonville is just 2-8 against the
spread in their last 10 games overall and is they are 0-4 against the
spread wehn playing a team with a winning record.
This is a tough game to call because
of some of the injuries for the Patriots tht we just aren't quite sure
of the status. The most concerning of these injuries in Vince Wolfork
who is clogs up the middle of the defensive line. If Wolfork is unable
to go or isn't at 100 percent, Jacksonville may be able to get the
ground game going which could make it a tough day for New England.
There is also a chance of some bad weather. I am not going to predict
an outright Jag win but I think they can keepp it within a touchdown.
Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars + 8
