Being, more or less, at the midway point of the season, I thought it would be interesting to look at the efficiency of each team thus far.
It is very interesting to see these efficiency ratings vary somewhat from the normal power ratings that are usually looked at.
For example, a team may be more efficient on one side of the ball than the other side. But in totality, they will get a higher power rating than they may truly deserve.
Sometimes the power rating may be more reflective of a team’s potential than the team’s efficiency.
Most power ratings will list Buffalo, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Denver, Kansas City, Green Bay, New England, Detroit, Seattle, and Pittsburgh as the top teams.
But are they the most efficient teams and are they evenly efficient on offense and defense?
Just because a team has the potential does not mean they will always put it all together each week on both sides of the ball at the same time.
For example, a team may be very efficient on offense but is about to play a team that is very efficient on defense, while the other team is somewhat efficient on offense but very efficient on defense. Is that enough for the first team to necessarily win the game?
Another aspect to consider it that a team may be very efficient at passing but not at rushing. If the other team has a very efficient pass defense but not an efficient run defense, can the first team take enough advantage of that?
It is so hard for teams to play well enough on both sides of the ball. It is also hard for teams to be equally efficient at passing and rushing on offense, or equally efficient at pass defense and run defense.
