I was just reading about Dr J and never realized that this had taken place.I was a kid when all this happened and never really understood how he became a 76'er when he was a member of the Nets before the NBA and ABA merger. But I guess the Nets offered the Knicks Dr J's contract, and the Knicks turned them down. Now there's a lot more to the story then that about why the Nets did it,but essentially the Knicks had a chance to get Dr J,and said no thanks. That's gotta rank up there with Portland drafting Sam Bowie instead of Michael Jordan in the WTF were you thinking category. If Portland takes Jordan, the whole Bulls organization 6 championships and all, never would of happened.Come to think of it the United Center might have never been built (it is considered the house that Jordan built),cause before Jordan and after Jordan that organization has been sh*t.Jerry Reinsdorf must still be thanking his lucky stars that Portland messed up that draft.

I don't think it was the Nets not wanting him.It was something about the NBA-ABA merger, and the Knicks suing the cash strapped Nets for millions cause they infringed on the Knicks NBA territory. So the Nets offered Dr J instead of paying the fine, but the Knicks refused the offer. That's when the 76'ers jumped in and payed for Dr J's contract, and payed the Nets NBA expansion fee.
