Check this stuff out, could potentially be good news for fellow NBA fans:

NEW YORK — Here’s the dirty little secret about the NBA lockout, despite what both sides — the owners and the players — would have you believe:

They are a lot closer to a settlement than most people realize.

I know this because I talk regularly with a bunch of important people who tell me important things, and I am going to explain why I believe a settlement will be reached that will not only save the season, but also enable the NBA to have an “all is forgiven” honeymoon period (similar to what the NFL just experienced following its labor settlement) in which the frenzy of free agents signings, trades, training camps and exhibition games will make everyone forget all of the doomsday talk they’ve been hearing all summer.

While it's a well-written article, I don't see any indication this guy is close to the truth.  Most of his points don't have to do much with why the lockout was started in the first place.  I would like to be wrong and the season starts on time.  Owners are willing to give more money towards certain things, but the main thing is the players (especially the superstars who people pay to see) wouldn't be willing to take an inevitable hard cap situation.  What I take from the whole article is the NBA season essentially rests in the hands of guys like the Heatles.  A hard cap is necessary to create equal competition in the league as well as lower overall salaries.  While I don't understand why the NBA lies or fudges its stats on revenue, I know for sure the players don't deserve any more money than they are making now.

A settlement could be a long ways a way, there are so many other little things to consider other than the obvious that has led to the lockout.  I wouldn't even put league contraction or dissolution out of the question.  I would like to see that red, white, and blue ABA ball come back.

Shortly after the meeting, Knicks guard Roger Mason(notes) Jr., a member of the players’ executive committee, wrote “Looking like a season. How u” on his Twitter page. He later deleted that post and wrote a subsequent one that his account had been hacked.

"Neither side is saying if progress is being made to end the work stoppage. But after a six-hour meeting last week, the frequency of their talks is being viewed as a positive after they held only two sessions in the first two months after owners locked the players out on July 1.

Commissioner David Stern said after Wednesday’s meeting they have three weeks to reach a deal, with training camps set to open the first week of October."

Lockout, lockout. I think we all smelled it coming. I for one am going to focus on my fantasy football team in the meantime. what are you all going to do? Here’s an interesting write-up with some suggestions I’d like to share. Check it out, or don’t, whatever.

So, one guy who is a never-was (Mason, I'm assuming) thinks they have a good chance of playing? Hmm, that doesn't make me feel much better considering their last players' meeting didn't even come close to making a deal.

If they were so sure there was even a shot at having a season, you wouldn't have all these players committing to overseas. If anything, the situation has worsened over time.

I agree 100%. I'm an NBA diehard. I don't want to miss any games. Casual fans won't care until maybe Christmas time, but I will be very disappointed if I don't get my early season NBA games. Shame on the players and the owners for being unable to get a deal done. If Billy Hunter and Derek Fisher really sent letters to the players that said a 50-50 split was not a "fair deal", they can go fuck themselves for all I care.

Was agents that sent the letter and it wasnt about a 50-50 split players wont accept a 49-51 split and owners wouldnt accept and 51 -49 in favor of players and agents want stern to open the books

All they are doing is arguing about money.

Couple of things to keep in mind while we all switch over to college basketball:

    1. David Stern works for the owners.

    2. If, as the owners say (and I trust the owners about as much as I would trust the players) 22 of 30 teams are losing money, you would think we'd be hearing about contraction. Ever notice how we never hear about that?

    3. I'd love to see, say, two teams vanish, then have those players travel "abroad" and find out how the NBA wasn't so bad, after all.......

    Gotta disagree with you Kap.

There's another example of Stern's bullshit accounting practices in an article by Malcolm Gladwell on grantland.com ( I don't know how to create a link).

Basically it talks about Stern using last year's sale of the Nets as an example of everything that is wrong with the NBA financial system. Stern claims that this sale cost the previous owner hundreds of millions. Yet at the same time, that previous owner continues to brag about the great ROI he got on that same sale. In addition, the new owner (Prokhorov) says he is very happy with this sale and it's potential for "explosive" profits.

... Stern lying through his face again ... I'M SHOCKED

... ESPN and the rest of the corporate media not questioning the fabrications put forth by the super-rich ...
