Collaboration is the key.  Just look at how many people she worked with on her albums.  She somehow brings out the best in other artists and that is kinda cool in my book.

    Fuck Madonna.

For her entire career, she's been about appropriating whatever she feels like appropriating at the time in order to sell records.  Her numerous "reinventions" have all been B.S., just ways for her to use everything from race to sexual identity to religion in order to make money.

I feel this way about everything about her from her musical styles to her adoption (why did she cut corners in order to adopt her son, anyway?).

"What's that?  Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt adopted a little black kid?  I think I want a little black kid, and I want one NOW!"

In closing, I reiterate my opening statement: Fuck Madonna.

madonna is an extremely talented artist. i've seen her in concert and you definitely get your money's worth. you can tell that she enjoys performing and puts alot of effort into her performance. she sings (no lip-synching), dances - a true entertainer.  her management team has done a tremendous job in marketing her. here's an artist who has had her share of media issues (high profile marriages, risque videos) without negative impact to her career. and remember she's been performing for almost 30 years. the only negative is that her fame has gotten to her head. i think in some cases she forgets where she came from and pretends to be some socialite. she's from a middle class family, with little to no education. but i still like her.

Artist? Her music-someone else plays it. Her dancing-someone else choreographs it. Media issues-she brought them on herself, using political, sexual, religional topics to impressionable people. How is she an artist?   It kills me how she is put on this pedestal and there are hard working, true musicians out there that don't get the recognition they deserve. Artist?

Totally disagree. This woman is phenomonal and she can play an instrumant. Check out her Live Earth performance...she plays guitar when performing Ray of Light.

She has kept up with the times by changing her style over the years and continues to put out best selling albums. Sure, she may have other people writing songs for her and choreographing her routines. But at least she can sing and carry off the choreography effortlessly. Very few of todays artist write their own music/choreography.

Ahombone111 makes the argument that she re-invents herself to make money....Of course, wouldn't you? Although, i think it's more about her maturing as a person. The woman is almost 50, the sex kitten thing just doesn't fly anymore and besides she is now a mother..if she continued with the whole sex kitten thing she would be called a bad mother or bad example for her children.

No question about it. This woman is talented.

Update here... I just checked a few of her songs...yes, other people wrote most.  but here are some that she wrote or cowrote:

    Everybody (her first single)
    Into the Groove
    Dress you Up
    Like a Prayer
    Express Yourself
    Cherish
    Vogue

ok, that's enough.  i didn't go through all of them to check the writing credits.  and i'm sure you haters will try to rebuff this.  But madonna is not the "no-talent ass clown" that you should be using your arguments for.  save it for Britney and bitches like that.  Madonna has talent.  I usually agree with the "people that actually play instruments and write their own music deserve more credit than that ho" argument.  but i disagree when it comes to madonna.  she deserves the credit.

ok, that's enough.  i didn't go through all of them to check the writing credits.  and i'm sure you haters will try to rebuff this.

Question:  Is Madonna less of a "musician" than Mick Jagger?  In essence, they do the same thing(write songs, sing them, and actively perform).

I don't have an answer but wanted to pose it to see some answers

Artist?  Yes, you could argue but by definition an artist is a skilled performer; especially one who is adept at something.  She is a singer-songwriter, producer, actress with 200 million record sales, one could consider that pretty adept.

Her music-someone else plays it.  Not to put madonna in the same category, but have you ever heard of robert plant, mick jagger, and roger daltrey. some of the greatest rock "artists" of all time. none are known for their ability to play a musical instrument.  technically, someone plays their music.

Her dancing-someone else choreographs it.  Perhaps. But, she is a trained dancer who prior to her singing career performed with several dance companies. I'm sure she is seriously involved in choreographing her shows and videos.

Media issues-she brought them on herself, using political, sexual, religional topics to impressionable people.  Absolutely. This is her claim to fame. She lives for controversy. It's what makes her unique. But unlike others, nothing she has done has hurt her career.

Artist? If you read her bio, she came from nothing. She was talented, worked hard, never gave up, made the right contacts. Other musicians may not get the recognition they deserve because they don't have the perseverance that she has. they don't have the balls to ruffle feathers and make a statement. there are many talented people in this world. but in order to make it you have to do something that separates you from the rest.

Hate to break the news to you picc, but Mick Jagger and Roger Daltrey do play the guitar. And no, you shouldn't disgrace those legends by putting Madonna in the same category. No, the artists don't get the recognition they deserve because they have substance- In their music, song lyrics and not selling out to every little fad and novelty that Madonna does. Actress? C'mon man. Perseverance? Right. . I think it's more like the fact that they don't have MTV to put them all over the air, as well as doing those antics to get noticed, and bubble gum crap lyrics.

never said that jagger and daltrey didn't play instruments, just said they weren't known for it. what artists are you talking about that don't get any recognition? with all of the online music channels available, you must be pretty bad if you can't find an audience. shit, nowadays you can win a reality show and sell a million records. as for selling out to every little fad, madonna has reinvented herself as music changes. she's evolved as music has. dance, pop, rock, electronica.  that's what makes her appealing. she has 6 grammys, and even a golden globe for her acting. sounds like someone thinks she has some talent.

She is a phenomenal entertainer.....I would even argue that she might be the top entertainer of the past 25 years.

Queen of pop music, bar none.

Never claimed to be only a fan of classic rock. Also into jazz, rhythm & blues, heavy metal, some country. Top entertainer? Yeah, I'll give you that.  But if I want to be entertained, I'll go to the circus. I'll take originality, true-to-your-roots every time over "what's the in thing" now and "what can I do this time".

its a business though.  you can't always stay true to your roots.  people that stay true to their roots and become poor because of it aren't exactly winners in life.  its too bad, but you can't fault winners for evolving.
