time to update the AFI "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains" 50 Villians list

the 2003 "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains" 50 Villains list is seriously out of date AND I think has some serious flaws with lame selections like "The Shark" in Jaws @ # 18, "Man" in Bambi @ #20 and "The Martians" @ #27 in War of the Worlds. also has characters listed I would NOT really consider "Villains" like Michael Corleone in Godfather II @ #11, Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver @ #30 or Bonnie Parker/ Clyde Barrow in Bonnie & Clyde @ #32. here are 10 that I think belong on the 50 Villains list in NO particular order...

Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) in Goodfellas. the guys is a total psycho who can go off at any minute and murder someone, even a friend, for no reason. is listed @ #23 on the Xfinity.com Top 25 Villains list

Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman) in Leon (aka The Professional). one of the best "menacing villains" in modern film. a corrupt DEA Agent he has NO problem murdering women and children. just the scene of him threatening Natalie Portman as Mathilda should have gotten BOTH an Oscar nomination. is listed @ #34 on the Flavorwire.com 50 Greatest Movie Villains of All Time list

John Doe (Kevin Spacey) in Seven . one of the scariest psychos ever. this guy is SO nuts with his "seven deadly sins" murders it will give you nightmares. is listed @ #1 on the Complex.com 50 Best Villains in Movie History list

Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) in Platoon. completely immoral "leader" who murders a woman and allows his troop to commit atrocities in the a Vietnamese village then murders another Sergeant to try and cover it up. is listed @ #20 on the Complex.com 50 Best Villains list

Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) in The Green Mile. IF Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is #5 all-time on the AFI list, just WHERE do you put THIS little psycho fukk? Percy is Ratched on steroids. he uses his position and connections to make everyone's life miserable culminating with his burning Delacroix to death at his execution. I was completely SHOCKED (no pun intended) his character is on NO Best Villains list ANYWHERE

Bill "The Butcher" (Daniel Day-Lewis) in Gangs of New York. completely immoral murderer who stands for every anti-Irish racist in 19th Century New York City. this guy kills just for the "sport" of it. listed @ #25 Xfinity.com Top 25 Villains list 

Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb (Ted Levine) in The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins as Doctor Hannibal Lecter is listed as the all-time #1 Villain on AFI (and rightly so) BUT "Buffalo Bill" is the REALLY scary guy in the movie. would you ever help someone load a van after seeing THIS guy? listed @ # 20 on the Xfinity.com Top 25 Villains list

The Penguin (Danny DeVito) in Batman Returns. my favorite Batman villain EVER. DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot is total evil and his leering at and slobbering over Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman makes him even more menacingly disgusting. listed @ #34 on the Complex.com 50 Best Villains list

Anton Ciguhr (Javier Bardem) in No Country for Old Men. the guy is just a complete badass that kills everyone or anything in his way. with the total mayhem Bardem brings to the role, IF I was in a bar and the guy can in the front door, I would be going out the back. his "captive bolt pistol" has to be one of the BEST murder weapons EVER. listed @ # 15 on both the Flavorwire.com 50 AND the Complex.com 50 Best Villains lists

Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) in There Will Be Blood. a second bite at the Best Villain apple for D-D Lewis. Plainview is the very model of the immoral early 20th Century oil man determined to succeed at all cost no matter the effect on family or associates and is no above committing murder when someone has crossed him. loosely based on the 1927 Upton Sinclair novel Oil!, Plainview is supposedly modeled after early California oil men operating in Bakersfield. both a Best Actor Oscar and Golden Globe for Lewis. listed @ #26 on the Complex.com 50 Best Villains list.

Robert De Nero as Max Cady in Cape Fear is NOT on the list BUT Robert Mitchum in that roll IS @ # 28

The Warden / Shawshank Redemption. Bob Gunton as Warden Norton another excellent villain that like Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) in The Green Mile is on NO villians list that I have see 

Kevin Bacon / The River Wild & Wild Things. Bacon could also be listed for the part of prison guard Sean Nokes in Sleepers. ex for Astronaut Jack Swigert in Apollo 13, the guy always seems to play creepy rolls. same for Michael Madsen. always a scary guy

aqnother great movie villain also NOT listed is probably the "longest running" of both stage and screen going back to 16th Century England, Richard Plantagenet aka Richard III. the guy is just pure murdering evil in his quest to become the king. the two great movies I have seen of Shakespeare's play are the 1955 classic with Sir Laurence Olivier as Richard set in Richard's time and the 1995 production with Ian McKellen in the title roll set in 1930's Britain. both are excellent with outstanding casts. the McKellen production plays on EPIX1 Wed July 31st @ 9:45 pm and on EPIX2 Sun Aug 4th @ 11:20 pm pacific times. the Olivier runs on Turner Classic Movies every so often.

going to "remove and replace" The Penguin (Danny DeVito) in Batman Returns on my Top 10 list with Scorpio (Andy Robinson) in Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry (1971). I must be getting onset alzheimer's to forget THAT totally sadistic psycho murderer. AFI REALLY blew it NOT selecting his character, SHOULD not only be on the list BUT in the Top 10 at least AND, surprisingly enough, like the character of Percy Wetmore in The Green Mile , he is also NOT on any other Top Villains list I have seen either. don't these people watch movies?  

Robinson's portrayal as Scorpio was SO powerful that, much like Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched, it poisoned his career and he had trouble finding movie rolls to play. the only really "steady work" that either had in their careers were as characters in the Star Trek: Deep Space 9 TV series in the 1990's

find it hard to take both Rick Moranis as "Dark Helmet" or Mike Myers as "Doctor Evil" serious as villains

AFI has the "Xenomorph" (Alien) in Alien @ #14 so the Predator should probably be on the list too.

it's on the MGM movie channel Sunday Aug 18th at 10:55 pm pacific. looking forward to seeing IF Robert Mitchum lives up to the AFI "hype"

Dr. Christian Szell aka 'Der weisse Engel' (Laurence Olivier) in Marathon Man, "Oh, don't worry. I'm not going into that cavity. That nerve's already dying. A live, freshly-cut nerve is infinitely more sensitive. So I'll just drill into a healthy tooth until I reach the pulp. That is unless, of course, you can tell me that it's safe." Olivier's performance is outstanding as the escaped Nazi, Szell obsessed with diamonds, the scene at the bank when he finally gets the stones is just perfect acting. A classic thriller that I highly recommend.

his character definitely deserves his spot on the AFI list. I think at least as good a "menacing villain" as his Max Cady in Cape Fear. nothing scarier than a religious nut that thinks his "service to the Lord" justifies his actions

watched Blue Velvet (1986) last night just to see IF Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth deserved his #36 spot on the AFI list. overall the movie kinda stunk. the plot and acting is half baked and I found myself doing a lot of "page thru". Hopper is a decent "psycho gangster" as Booth BUT don't think his character is nearly THAT menacing compared to a Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) in Goodfellas  or Anton Ciguhr (Javier Bardem) in No Country for Old Men. thought that Brad Dourif as as Booth accomplice Raymond was actually scarier in his scenes. he is another actor like Kevin Bacon, Michael Madsen or Andy Robinson that is just a natural born "menacing villain"  

saw a trailer for the 1943 "psycho thriller" Shadow of a Doubt on TCM last night and I remember seeing this one years ago with Joseph Cotten as the "Bluebeard" style serial killer "Uncle Charlie". definitely an excellent "menacing villain" who could have easily made the AFI list. he is a sauve version of Rev Harry Powell in Night of the Hunter. an early direction by Alfred Hitchcock pre his psycho thriller classics Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window (1954) and, of course Psycho (1960)

it plays again on Turner Classic Movies Friday Sept 13th @ 5:00 pm pacific time. definitely worth watching/recording

where is JOKER from the dark knight ???

The Dark Knight was a 2008 movie so Heath Ledger's Joker is NOT on the AFI list BUT he is on just about every other "current" villains list. definitely on one of the BEST "menacing villains" EVER

You have to go way back for this silly submission but what about the Witch in "The Wizard of Oz"?  That gal had me scared for a long time. Can't remember her name right now.

the great Margaret Hamilton as Miss Gulch and The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz STILL #4 on the AFI Top 50 Villains list. STILL scaring the shite out of young children since 1939. just the line "I'll Get YOU MY Pretty, and Your Little Dog TOO!!!" followed by the "Hillary Cackle" of a laugh should keep her in the top 50 for all time.

btw, that quote is rated WAY low @ #99 on the AFI 100 Movie Quotes list.

Margaret Hamilton of course!  So iconic.  I haven't seen the list so had no idea it was even on it.  #4?  Your calling it the"Hillary Cackle" is great. That's funny.

By the way,  A little " The Professional"  talk is always good.  I was so stunned by this film when I saw it. It just came out of the blue. That movie danced around all sorts of things with out being obvious. Brilliant!  I immediately started talking up this incredible child actress that was going to be great. Jean Reno would have more serious parts if it was up to me. He was Academy award material in this one. Oldman was perfect. Wish they had time to flesh out is character more.
