"Come and See"....
what is the historic period and basic plot line, FancyClown? I have found many of the old (mostly WWII era) or obscure war movies to be excellent.
Enemy At the Gates about the battle of Stalingrad is one already mentioned. another is the 1949 Task Force with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan which is the basic history of the development of the aircraft carrier in Naval Aviation from it's beginning through WWII.
in fact, THE all time greatest ANTI-WAR movie is STILL the 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front which was so powerful in showing the insanity of war it was banned by the nazi's in Germany after they took over in 1933. almost 80 year old and STILL great.

Quote from imdb:
"A boy is unwillingly thrust into the atrocities of war in WWII Byelorussia, fighting for a hopelessly unequipped resistance movement against the ruthless German forces. Witnessing scenes of abject terror and accidentally surviving horrifying situations he loses his innocence and then his mind."
Go and see, you will never forget it.

Enemy at the gates is pretty cool, as it was a real event. The movie is not that good, but the real history is.
Vassily Tzaisev (sorry if I mispell it) took down over 200 germans with his mossin nagat, and made a kill with an 800 meters shot.
He was a real assassin.
