Of course, the "latest" movies would be rated higher. I'm not knocking Platoon or Saving Private Ryan. Both are epic.
But during WWII, any movie made in Hollywood, got shipped right to our boys ASAP. They got to see these flicks first. Does that make them the "best"? I don't know. But any movie shown to a soldier before the Battle of Midway has got my vote.......

Apocalypse now was great. Platoon and Full Metal Jacket should be up there too. A lot of people tend to rate the recent movies higher because they had more budget for special effects. Saving Private Ryan was good but I liked Black Hawk Down better.

Hamburger Hill is my favorite and I think is the most underrated war movie ever made.
Agree, very underrated.
Apocalypse Now might be my #1 war movie, but it had a lot less to do with war like the others, but the plot was better, a lot more dark.
Full Metal Jacket is my #2.
Saving Private Ryan could easily been #1 if Tom Hanks doesn't let the German go free. God, that ruined the entire movie. BoB is what SPR should of been.

then there are a bunch of movies between #3 and Saving Matt Damon.... which, aside from an interesting opening scene, was pretty fucking shallow... shit, I'm not sure that it was better than TAPS or The Big Red One..... LOL... at least no one has mentioned First Blood... "Do we get to win this time?"
The top three for me go like this:
Apocalypse Now
The Thin Red Line
Full Metal Jacket

Apocalypse Now is an excellent movie BUT when I first saw it in 1980 it seemed somewhat chopped up and incomplete like there were gaps in the story and something was missing. the 2001 director's cut "Redux" adds the 49 minutes that was cut from the original
stealing Kilgore's surf board or the scenes at the bunny base were probably rightly cut for run time from the original because they really don't add the plot BUT the French Plantation scene, I think, is essential to the overall story line if for any other reason that it answers the question of what happened to Clean's body after he is killed.
Redux has been running again on Cinemax and is scheduled for showings throughout next week.

watched Battle of Britain (1969) last night for maybe the hundredth time and still enjoyed it. maybe not THE greatest war flik of all time but definately in the top 10 for history buffs. very well done aerial scenes and it's the one movie about the battle that gives proper credit to the foreign pilots that fought for the English.
has one of the great quotes in ANY war movie.....
Air Minister: "Ah, Dowding. Er. Look. Our people in Washington are having trouble with the American Press. It's about today's figures (of German aircraft shot down). German sources there are saying that our claims are wildly exaggerated."
(Sir Laurence Olivier as) Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding: [listens, but says nothing]
Minister: Hello? Are you there Dowding?
Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding: I'm here Minister.
Minister: Well I mean, can you verify the figures?
Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding: [clears throat] I'm not very interested in propaganda. If we're right, they'll give up. If we are wrong, they'll be in London in a week.
[pauses then hangs up]
