If sliding/diving gets you there quicker you'd see the 100m sprinters dive at the finish line.

Not exactly true. It helped him against Wilson. It's all about the situation and the angle of the pitcher. If Gardner thought Lee could have tagged him if they were both running, than sliding is the right idea.
However...Gardner admitted after Game 1 that he feels faster when diving with the momentum of pushing himself foward.
If so can i Get a pair.
