Tarik Skubal vs. Quinn Mathews does look like a safe investment, though offered at a rip-off price. If I had to back the Dodgers tonight in some way, I would lay the half run in the 1st 5 innings with Skubal -.5 -175.

Hey, I actually took my own advice and bet on the Dodgers -.5 -175 in the 1st 5 innings. I have half of that parlayed to the Rangers +110 in the 1st 5 innings and the other half parlayed to the Rangers +.5 -130 in the 1st 5 innings.

l also parlayed the Rangers +110 in the 1st 5 innings to the Dodgers -280 in the 1st 5 innings. And lastly, I parlayed the Rangers +.5 -133 to the Dodgers -280.

Tarik Skubal is not on his game. He needed 41 pitches to get through the first two innings and he’s already allowed 5 hits! None of them were cheap either.

Mookie Betts Update: In his first at-bat worthless Mookie grounded out to second.

Kyle Tucker Update: In his first at-bat, worthless Kyle Tucker popped up to third on the first pitch he saw.

The totally ineffective “ace” Skubal continues to give up hard-hit singles to most batters. Three more of them in the top of the 3rd has put the weakened Dodgers in a 2-0 hole, and that is a deficit they will be unable to overcome before the 5th inning ends.

Will they score even one run off of Quinn Mathews in the 1st 5 innings? I expect the answer is no, and it’s a definite no to the possibility of tying this game.

Mookie Betts Update: In his second at-bat worthless Mookie struck out.

In the bottom of the 1st inning Freddie Freeman came up with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and hit a harmless fly ball to left. 

In the bottom of the 3rd inning Freddie Freeman came up again with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and again hit a harmless fly ball to left.

Thanks, unclutch Freddie.

Miguel Rojas came up with the bases loaded and two out and the Dodgers are now 0-4 with runners in scoring position.

Betting on the Dodgers is so far a gruesome and infuriating experience. 

Through 3 innings Dodgers, Team LOB 6, Team RISP 0-4 (Freeman 0-2, Rojas 0-1, Smith 0-1) Need some clutch hit guys.

That might happen after the 5th inning, but not before.

Tarik Skubal finally recorded a 1-2-3 inning, but it doesn’t matter because the Cardinals already scored the only run they needed. They scored two, actually, with the second one being unnecessary.

That is true. My 1st 5 inning action on these lifeless Dodgers had nothing to do with the “Dodgers won’t get swept by the Cardinals” theory. It had everything to do with believing that Quinn Mathews could not outduel Skubal for five innings. 

But he’s three outs away from doing just that.

Tommy Edman gets the bottom of the 5th started by smashing a double down the left field line. That’s the good news. The bad news is worthless Mookie is up next.
