The reports out of Seattle last week had the Mariners making a concerted push to sign free agent outfielder Jason Bay. The Mariners then closed in on a deal with Chone Figgins, calling into question whether they would have enough money to spend on Bay.
Bay apparently hopes so. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports via twitter that "Bay has been telling his former Pirates teammates he'd stand on his head and sing on E. Martinez Way to play for M's." Bay is from British Columbia and lives in the Pacific Northwest, so proximity is an advantage for the Mariners.
In the meantime, the Boston Red Sox would like to retain Bay.
Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com says "the Mariners, Angels, Giants and Mets could all be Bay shoppers, in addition to the Red Sox.
