UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen Quick Picks

Work has been crazy this week, going to try and get all my picks up quickly today.

Jon Jones   vs.   Chael Sonnen   Confirmed
Main Event | Title Fight | Light Heavyweight | 205 lbs (93.0 kg)


Could Chael win by repeatedly grounding Jones and riding it out on top? Possibly, he may even be able to take a round from Jones if he is able to do so, but in the end Jones wins this fight, and probably gets the finish.

Prediction - Jon Jones via submission in the second, some sort of choke.

Michael Bisping   vs.   Alan Belcher  
Co-Main Event | Middleweight | 185 lbs (83.9 kg)

Belcher has the power to put Bisping away if he can land the right shot, problem is I don't see him getting off accurately enough to hurt or stun Bisping. The only men to stop Bisping with strikes are Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort. Bisping is the better fighter over all and should take this via UD.

Prediction - Bisping via UD.

Roy Nelson   vs.   Cheick Kongo 
Main Card | Heavyweight | 265 lbs (120.2 kg)

Nelson had walking pneumonia for his fight against Junior Dos Santos, basically fighting super sick and still took every punch JDS threw his way. I struggle to see any way Kongo wins this. I guess he could win using his reach, staying on the outside and winning on points, Big Country dosen't let anyone do that to him though, don't know why he would start now.

Prediction - Roy Nelson via KO in the 3rd.

Phil Davis   vs.   Vinicius Magalhaes
Main Card | Light Heavyweight | 205 lbs (93.0 kg)

I really want to pick Vinny, fine I will! The more likely outcome is Davis uses his wrestling in reverse or offensivley but just enough to score points and stay out of the subissions. That being said I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Vinny holds his own in the stand-up and even catches Phil, Davis then restorts to his wrestling to clear the cobwebs but gets reversed and submitted, possibly via some sort of choke.

Davis will probably lay on him for three rounds but this picking like this is way more fun, screw the record!

Prediction - Vinny via submission in the 1st.

Jim Miller   vs.   Pat Healy  
Main Card | Lightweight | 155 lbs (70.3 kg)

I love Healy, and whenever I bet against him he seems to win. On paper this doesn't look good for Healy. He has the size and wrestling to give Miller fits but may be a bit to plodding and predicatble to implement his clinch game. While Miller has good wrestling and scrambling ability he is not immune to being put on his back. Once on top Healy is one of the best in the game at maintaining top control and breaking the will of his opponents through cardio and constant pressure.

They key to this fight will be Jim's speed, he is much faster than Healy. Look for Jim to move in and out with his strikes quickly, not allowing healing to grab a hold of him.

Prediction - Jim Miller via split decision.

Yancy Medeiros   vs.   Rustam Khabilov

Never seen Medeiros fight and do not have time to see if there is any footage online so I have little insight for this fight, all I can say is this:

DO NOT bet against a fighter from Dagestan, just don't do it.

Prediction - Khabilov via SUPLEX KO.

Goin with Villante, don't have the best read on either of these guys yet, I'll probably stay away.

14 of Caraway's 17 wins have come via some sort of tapout.

8 out of 9 loses for Bedford have come via submission.....

hmmmm....

Caraway coming in on short notice so this is makes it though to read.

God Cody McKenzie is terrible, so is Garcia, maybe less terrible though.

Prediction - Garcia via air punches.

Head probably stuffs enough of Catone's take-downs to win on the feet. Head via TKO in the 3rd.

Steven Siler   vs.   Kurt Holobaugh  
Preliminary Card | Featherweight | 145 lbs (65.8 kg)

Holobaugh really impressed me in his last fight with Pat Healy, he showed an active and dangerous guard and good sweeps and positional knowledge. Problem is it was Healy initiating most of the take-downs so I don't have a good read on his Kurt's clinch / open cage take-downs. I don't think he can win on the feet against Siler so his wrestling will need to be on point, I may be mistaken but I think this is Kurt's first fight at 145 and for sure the first in the UFC. He has a very tough draw against Siler, while despite being completely wrestle fk'd by Elkins in his last fight has a rock solid clinch and effective take-down defense.

Prediction - I think Kurt will have his moments and make this close but Siler eventually takes over and finishes Kurt via TKO in the 3rd.

Jones has never been taken down before... his coach is also Greg Jackson...
