Why is Tate's win called submission when Holly didn't submit?  She was put to sleep so she never tapped out.  

I don't understand why it would be called a submission.

Can anyone explain this?

I think of submissions as holds and knockouts as punches
But I am no MMA expert

Are you serious? A rear choke hold is a submission move... it ended with that move... of course it counts as that.

Thanks Crash...It appears you are right on how they call that.  It just seems odd when she never tapped out.

Not sure what it should be considered as KO or TKO doesn't really fit either.

No big deal, was just curious if someone had an explanation

You're right a choke hold is a submissive move, but that typically ends in someone submitting and tapping out, which didn't happen.  In this case she did not submit, she was asleep.

I'm far from an MMA expert, just looking for some clarity.

yeah technically there was no submission. i guess technically it was a ko but not surprised they called it submission

A TKO is if the ref stops the fight. A KO is when he is on the canvas and the ref counts him out.

maybe since she (holm) could not fight anymore d/t being passed out, it is considered that she was submitted by not being able to fight anymore?

they will call it a technical submission officially.  That's what goes on their record when they go unconscious from a choke.

ParlayJoe is right, they call it a technical submission when a fighter goes unconscious due to a choke hold or other submission technique.

It's really not so complicated weather holly or anyone taps or not it ended it a submission move ...choke,armbars,leglock,kamora,trianlgle...etc. tap or not it = a submission
