Help a novice out

Trying to get more involved in horse racing this year.

Using race 1 as an example. Under 1/4 the large number is the place of the horse at that point. The superscript I believe is the distance behind the leader (or the distance ahead of second in the leader's case). How can the first place horse be ahead by a head and the second place horse be 2.5 lengths behind

And the third place horse also says "head" Where am I going wrong?

The leader was ahead by a hd, the horse running second was second by 2.5 lengths over third horse and the horse running in 3rd was ahead of the horse in fourth by a hd.

Does that make sense? It's the margin ahead of the horse behind you.

bring on the questions &#xD;&#xA;1) results charts are as Bull said - the lengths are # ahead of the horse behind you&#xD;&#xA;2) if you are looking at a DRF past performance program&#xD;&#xA;- for the winner - lengths refers to how many he/she won by&#xD;&#xA;- for others - lengths is # behind the WINNER at the finish
