This may or may not be true, but I've been told it's a survival technique that is built in their genes. It allows them to hide from predators. If there is no poop there is no scent for a predator to track them. Obviously that is not the case these days when most dogs are house dogs and parts of families, but when something is hereditary it is very hard to eliminate.
