road trip advice ( phoenix - chicago)

Question

Taking i-40 pretty much the whole way i think. Wish I had the time to take route 66 and gradually explore everything. Supposed to be very scenic with lots of solid spots to checkout along the way. So far I think I'm stopping in Tucumcari, New Mexico, Amarillo, Texas, Okla City, Okla, St louis, Missouri. Trying to make 3 1/2 days. I have a friend driving with me so it won't be too bad doing long days in the car (will definitely suck).

Anyone ever do this drive or one similar? Any must do things along the way or great spots to eat? I'll be paying very close attention to wildlife crossing signs fyi. As a gambling man, I like my chances of not hitting another deer

. Will probably check out a man vs food spot or two on the way. That's about all the planning I've done though. Thanks guys

I did the Minneapolis to Breckenridge, CO to Phoenix to TX to Minneapolis run my senior year in college.  I honestly can&#x27;t remember one place we stopped on the Phoenix to TX to Minneapolis part of the trip.    We pretty much took 35W straight north, though.  All I remember is OK boring the piss out of me.  Just drive until you see something interesting.

I&#x27;ve done Boston to Miami twice and Boston to Tijuana once. 24 hrs straight to Miami both times and about 3 days to Tijuana.. I ran out of drugs in N Texas and went into withdrawal until I got some drugs in Tijuana.. Memories..

Ive done some long distances. I drove all of texas, or what seemed like (Houston to Fort Stockton, then north to NM, through Amarillo, back down to Austin, then Houston).

Also did NY to Mt. Rushmore in SD. Aint a ton in Amarillo really. I stopped for the Cadillac Ranch there. Too bad you arent near San Antonio, I went to a Man vs. Food Burger joint called Chunky's. Might be the best burger I ever ate. Tvfoodmaps . com is a great site too.

there was a rib spot from Mvs.F in Kansas City, but you said you wont be stopping there. Honestly, the trip advisor forum which im sure you have heard of  is great for trips if you check it out.

miserable weather since I started this drive last night. Lucky to have made it to amarillo in one piece. When my friend was driving near flagstaff we went around a bend on the highway going like 70 and hit a patch of ice. We literally did 5 360's before we came to a stop facing the right way. I thought we were flying off the road for sure. Then today when I thought we were out of the snowy area new mexico and texas had a friggin blizzard and tornado warnings. Had to go like 20 mph the last 90 minutes to get to amarillo.

If you&#x27;re in OKC during lunchtime, go grab an onion burger from Nic&#x27;s Grill.  You won&#x27;t regret it.  There&#x27;s usually a long behind wait, only open during breakfast/lunch, and they only take cash, but it&#x27;ll be worth it.  Easily one of the best burgers I&#x27;ve ever had.  Also check out the OKC Bombing Memorial.  Both are easily accessible from I-40.

My wife and I did this exact trip 2 times,  but years ago. It was a 2 day adventure for us but worth the long days of driving since there&#x27;s not much to see. Weather is your biggest obstacle. If it snows on the Interstate, it&#x27;s no fun out west. It&#x27;s that dry powdery stuff.
