These stories are exactly the reason why we need to examine the reasons behind such draconian punishments.

Even if one does not support legalization, the sanctions in these situations are indefensible.

If we are a utilitarian/rehabilitation society in dealing with crimes, one cannot use such an approach as a defense for the sentence here under any argument.

If you use the retributive/punishment approach, it offers similar illogic as we are sentencing someone in a victimless crime to five years.

to which i answered that the solution is to end prohibition. What interest would gangs and cartels have in marijuana, if there wasn't any laws in place (prohibition) that enable a black market to form?

Do you think that the gangs and cartels will still seek involvement when the production end of the equation will be tantamount to farming corn and soy?? For THREE DOLLAR PER POUND MARIJUANA?
