hunters provide the VAST majority of money to protect habitats and wild life.
had there been no hunters last century in africa there would be no cats left at all. thats a fact. i got no desire to kill those suckers but dont curse those who do. thank them for keeping the species alive. evidence proves me correct.

so what you are saying is we should thank the hunters who decimated the population of every large predator for not completely destroying the population and leaving a few around to continue to kill more of them?

Have seen it. 
This particular lion was one of the same. Unfortunately he had to be shot. Probably an older nomadic male that lost his pride to another lion. Not strong enough to hunt any longer so humans become the meal of choice.
The only legal hunting of lions (or anything else), takes place on private ranches. The cats are inbred and cost a lot of money for trophy hunters to shoot. A percentage of the proceeds goes to the parks.

Lions are cool, but cruel. Pride males rarely do any hunting (the females to 90% of it), but they get first crack at a meal. They also are pretty much screwed once they can't defend their pride. And the crap of it is, if a male lion takes over a pride, he immediately kills all the cubs and impregnates the lionesses (who come into estrus immediately).

The private hunting in Africa is very important for preservation. I'm not a hunter and I find it fascinating that certain human elements would pay 10's of thousands of dollars to gun down what is essentially a retarded lion running loose on a ranch. Tourism dollars is perhaps most important factor in protecting the greatest show on earth. I can speak in detail for South Africa and Masai Mara Kenya but some of the others are still having to fight very hard...constantly. Poachers are sharp as hell. -they are ya see expert trackers from very early age within a respective tribe. NatGeo will tell you that they don't hunt lions or any other big game but trust me, they do, with a simple spear - it's bullshit. These guys are good and I mean real good. I've spent long days on foot with professional trackers from Zulu tribe that talked to me about what really goes on when the sun goes down... To catch one in the act requires another expert tracker.
Everybody wants to help but they end up in a body bag. Best hunters in the U.S are child's play for these guys.
It's a long story when you return from the bush and see what is actually going on, but overall, the rangers do an incredible job with the funds received. They understand how much revenue is generated from tourism. Go and see it.
