WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’ s belongings were stolen over the weekend at a restaurant in Washington, D.C, including her passport, driver’s license, keys and government access badge.

Both the Secret Service and DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the April 20 incident to USA TODAY.

McLaughlin told NewsNation that Noem’s purse contained $3,000 in cash and blank checks.

CNN reported that Noem’s medication and makeup bag were also stolen.

McLaughlin told USA TODAY that Noem’s entire family was in town, including her children and grandchildren, and that she was treating them to dinner, activities and Easter gifts.

The Secret Service has launched an investigation to “trace any use of Noem’s financial instruments,” according to CNN.

Before becoming secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, Noem served as the governor of South Dakota and as a Republican member of Congress.

In an appalling security breach, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was robbed by a masked man in a DC restaurant. Kristi Noem has Secret Service protection, but a masked man was able to snatch her purse while she dined at a restaurant on Sunday night. The thief took off with Noem’s purse which included $3,000 in cash, her passport, DHS badge and other valuables. The Secret Service is investigating the incident. 

“The Secret Service, which provides security for Noem, reviewed security camera footage at the restaurant and saw an unknown white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant, a law enforcement source said,” CNN reported. “The thief got away with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash,”
