Hey guys, I started getting into sports betting about 3 weeks ago. My first week I won about $1,000 by betting NHL and MLB, as of right now I am down $4,000 for the week and I only have $2,500 to pay the bookie. In everyone's opinion should I try to win some of it back in the remaining days, pay it off then completely stop. Or should I just stop now, pay it off and then completely stop for a while. Thanks in advance.

Most degenerate gamblers (myself included) would chase the loss. I suggest if you are really new to sports betting, you stop right now, pay the man off as best you can, work out a payment plan for the balance, and then try picking games without wagering any money on them. Track your plays and see if you can be profitable over the course of a season. Will teach you about variance and money management.

Well I can pay the whole thing back over the course of 2 weeks, just not the 1 week time frame he gives everyone. And i'll admit that I was being an idiot and should have never let myself get that far down in the hole (4,000)

Thanks kaponofor3 for the advice. What really got be hooked was the $1,000 win my first week. It's tempting to put $1,000 down on an MLB game and cut my deficit from $4,000 to $3,000.

U should've been following my last 10 MLB picks. Just kidding. Tell the bookie what you have and tell him you won't bet anymore until you get the rest of his money. Don't be stupid and don't bet more money you don't have.

You are doomed if 1. You look at the dime win your first week and think that is the norm....or if it jazzes you so much that you make dumb bets, and 2. You continue to bet more than you can afford.
It's pretty apparent that you like betting more than you like winning.
You bet more money than you can afford to lose. You'll never, EVER win long term with that approach.

Lots of stupid people on this site. Everyone acts like they have never been in this situation before and gets all fucking holy on the poor dude.
IMO this is what you should do.
1. Lie - Pay him $2,500 when you see him and that you'll have the rest next week. Make some shit up about being limited to pull out more than that from your bank account or that your check is on hold by the bank. Something to stall a bit.
2. Bet 1 game at a time - Wins/Losses are in streaks, you get hot, you get cold. Right now you're cold. Find a game, remove emotion, pick your winner and bet hard, like 1k. Try to get the balance down below $2,500, then bet smaller.
Not popular advice, but really what does it matter if you owe him 4k or 6k, you don't have it either way. What you do have right now is some time, so make the most of it and win back your money.
Don't end up going down 10k, b/c ur gonna screw yourself. Or borrow $1500 from a friend for a week or two.
Again, I know I'm gonna get bashed for this advice. But your back is against the wall, you either curl up, pay up and walk away, or you step up and hope you're on the right side. Define your moment and go with it.
I've been down severely several times with some winning it all back plus thousands, other times getting hurt bad. I've learned years ago to only bet my strengths and that is in the last 1/4 of a season and playoffs as you have no idea what motivates players to perform on any given day. But near the end of the season, they are motivated again as the playoffs are coming.
Just my two cents! Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks FrozenTundra for the advice, I talked to my bookie and he's cool with me paying half now and half next week. I'm pretty scared to bet huge as of right now because I am a rookie and I made a mistake by chasing. I purchased 5 $5 picks from the experts and only 2 were correct so that didn't help much. So my plan is to pay the $2,000, and to sell the big screen for another $1,500 :P
Lesson learned: Don't bet money you dont have. Will I bet again: Probably, but only $25-$75 a game.

Haha I am trying to stall, I bet $250 on the NY Mets today. And the last person that didn't pay my mafia bookie didn't get beat up or anything, they just destroyed the living shit out of his $20,000 car and house. He eventually paid.
I'm tempted too put more on the Mets but as you know anything can happen and I really don't want to get more down in the hole.

Agreed, I plan on posting my picks every day here in a year or two when I start to get good so people who have no $ management and rookies can not end up like me.

Stick one thumb up your ass and the other one in your mouth and rotate them every 5 seconds for betting money you dont have! He will put you on a payment plan, pay it off BEFORE you dig a hole you will never get out of.

Give your bookie 2000 of the 2500 you have while apologizing to him for betting more than you had to wager. Explain to him that you will pay him 500 a week until the remaining balance is paid off. You will have 500 left ,from your original 2500, after paying him the 2000 so this will already give you your first weeks payment . Make the remaining three payments and consider this a life lesson.
