There are some athletes that are good tippers, however, from what I've experienced, most aren't good at all. Especially basketball players. I'm talking about not only working in food & beverage; but also as a blackjack dealer, which I currently do. I'll list them:
Charles Barkley--He is awesome. He used to come in to the casino I work at about once 6-8 weeks. Great guy, tips great, very outgoing and very approachable. Buys drinks and shots for people he plays with at the tables.
Michael Jordan--I've never dealt to him, but work with people who dealt to him in Chicago. One cheap, cheap mofo. He wouldn't tip anyone and he would request black dealers to deal to him. Btw, he and Barkley would do a lot of stuff together. Barkley was the one who tipped the staff(dealers, wait staff, caddies, etc.), after Jordan stiffed them.(How ironic, when it was a rich white Jewish guy who paid him all his millions) They've played on tables, and Barkley would call Jordan out, telling him how cheap he is.
Tiger Woods--He is one cheap prick too. He would come in and play poker with Shawn Marion a few times. Marion is a stiff too. They don't tip shit. And that was when Woods was making $100 million a year in endorsements alone, besides his golf earnings!
Amare Stoudamire--Cheap no tipping jerk. The sad thing about that too is he would go to clubs in Phoenix area and the club owners would comp him his drinks!

Jeremy Roenick--A good tipper and a great guy. He came into this restaurant I was working at with his wife and his daughters. He left 20% and was very gracious to talk to a few people who approached his table. He went out of his way to thank me on his way out and shook my hand.
Wayne Gretzky--I was working at this restaurant and it closed at 11. At 10:55, this table of six was seated, waiting for one more person. They ordered drinks and waited and waited til 11:45 when the last person showed up. It was Gretzky. He was drunk and they kept me there til 1:30. He was a little arrogant, but he tipped me 20%.
Jeffrey Hammonds--Real nice guy who was with his brother. He tipped 30%.
Vinnie Del Negro--He was a cheap bastard. He had his dinner comped and he left 10%.
Scott Williams--Same as Del Negro. Dinner comped, 10%.
Steve Jordan--Real nice guy. Dinner was comped. Left a 30% tip.
Luis Gonzalez--Very nice guy. He left 25%. He is loved in Arizona. A few people approached him and he took the time to talk and sign a couple autographs.
Chili Davis--He was cheap. He tipped the women servers decent but not the men. He also made it a point to come in right before closing. I didn't like him anyways because he called STL a cow town when he played with the Giants.
Grant Fuhr & Phil Housley--Real nice guys who tipped well. Very outgoing and loved to talk sports.
Emmitt Smith--He's cheap. He came into the casino I work at and didn't tip the dealers. He even asked the mgt. to give him a table that was roped off from the public. He didn't want to be bothered. As if anybody shouldve bothered him. The casino mgt. didn't accomodate him..
Francisco Rodriguez--He is an okay tipper. He was in the casino a few days ago. He lost $20k. Not much to blink at if you make $14 million per, I guess. I dealt to him a couple years ago, and he was getting mad because he was losing. He might have lost $2k. Funny, because he made his temper public last year.

Mark Grace--He's okay. He would bring in a chick he was messing around with into the casino. She would tip me here and there, him not so much, but they were playing with his money. So I guess he tipped me, indirectly. He is a pretty cool guy though.
Paul Pierce--He played blackjack in the casino. He's a stiff. Gee, what a surprise..
Albert Belle--He is a stiff and one arrogant asshole. He would play blackjack and get all mad and lose his temper when he lost. He would even insult the other players. Remember when he threw that baseball at a fan and it hit the fan in the chest? Well, he also had a restraining order put on him by a woman he had been dating. He was stalking her and he had put a gps tracking device on her vehicle. Total jerk..
Jared Jeffries--He is a nice guy. He would come in to play blackjack. He tipped decent. He was a decent blackjack player too..
Wally Sczerbiak--He played blakjack and tipped decent. Was in town playing golf with his buddy. Nice guy too.

Great contributions there Kodiak. Sounds like you've rubbed elbows with a lot of solid athletes. Would it be fair to say that rich athletes tip about the same as Poor Joe Blow?

So Kodiak......I go into a casino and bet $1000 per hand on one blackjack shoe and win $20k then I tip the dealer $200 am I cheap? After all the shoe took 15 minutes to deal which would make the dealer tip $800 per hour. Another question would be would a blackjack dealer prefer the $200 or would they rather have it put up as a wager? One more thing.....there are normally more than one casino in an area. You might see a guy win $20k but you didn't see him lose $60k at the other casino. Technically he's -40k so how much would you tip if you were out that much? Personally I tip on the amount of time I was there and not how much I won and a lot of times I put the dealer up with me and don't count those winnings with my tip. As for restaurants I always leave more than 15%.

I worked in the home's of two golden state warriors. One of them was actually very nice. I was working outside actually and when we asked his assistant if we could get a autograph he actually came out with glossys and signed them for us. He kicked it for about 10 minutes and bs'd with us. I thought it was better than him him giving us a few dollars.
