Anything worse than this crap? 

" hey can you please make a bet for me? " 

Me - " sure but pay me on time if you lose " 

They lose and now I have to jump thru hoops to get the money. This has happened to me tons of times and I still havnt learned my lesson

he was trying to be a nice guy BILL, nice guys finish last though..get the money up front of just tell your friends all the money on your account is already tied up on wagers

Yeah buddy called me up and wanted to make the wager. He's good for it but its a hassle to get the money. I have to remind him , then drive over to his house. Then meet my guy to pay for him. On top of it all I feel like he's upset with me for losing lol 

Never again. Up front or nada

Only 2 ways to deal with those silly requests by #1 degenerate rule carved in stone.

Take their action yourself away from your account or deny their request completely.

Win or lose it causes trouble and creates a stir in your longterm deposit. Never do it.

They win you lose.

They lose you lose.

Paying for others upfront and expecting to be paid back is anything but easy.  You always want to be the nice guy.   I have learned it the hard way.  Too many hoops to jump through just to get paid.   Not even talking about gambling. Get the money upfront always.

They are too lazy to line up their own outs. 

I have been asked to lay bets down before.  Just said no, or if I liked the other side bet em straight.

^Truth.

I would of booked it myself but it was a bet on a horse and it was the favorite. Horses are always a sucker bet and I thought it would lose but didnt want to pay out a few hundred if he won. The horse came in 6th lol

Besides helping a friend-What's the upshot for YOU? I have done favors for friends/strangers cause of the good karma bullsh*t but not if it costs me money.When I loan money for the most part I don't expect to see it again. If everything/everyone follows through on what they should do in your case it's zero sum gain.I'll do anyone a favor if it doesn't cost me a $.

Just tell them the truth.  Say "I'm too lazy to call in your bet. If I did, and you lose, you're too lazy to pay me timely.  It's a lose lose for both of us, get your own book"

I borrowed a gal in our office $2K last month.  She just got divorced and is waiting for the settlement.  Probably one of the dumbest things I've ever done, but I am proof that sometimes you do run into some bad luck/timing.  I had friends borrow me money when I was in grad. school (ie. when I was waiting for a fellowship check, or a paycheck from work etc.).  I would have been screwed if they didn't have faith in me (and I ALWAYS paid them back).  

I've been screwed doing this, but only once.  And I've done it a fair amount.  All you can do IMO is go with your gut (and I would not have done this if losing the $ would put me in the poor house).

I just don't agree that you can have a blanket personal policy for stuff like this (but I certainly don't fault those that do).  Whatever works for you.

I hate doing it even with getting money up front but I'll usually do it for one off things like the Super Bowl or something.  

As far as lending or spotting my buddy's father used to have a motto of "don't lend to people who borrow".  It's annoying chasing people down especially if it's for a small amount like $50 or something.
