can derek jeter catch pete rose hit record?

Rose averaged about 100 hits a year for his last 8 years.  If Jeter duplicates (in terms of hits and age he plays to), he's still 4 years short.  You can already see the hits on the decline.  

BTW, this has nothing to do with what anyone thinks of Jeter....it's just simple math. 

Well...Jeter did have 100 less ABs this season because of an injury. He's usually very durable. And while he did have less hits...he had a much better season than last year. So he's not exactly on the decline yet. I say get back to back seasons where he hits around .270 and then you can say he's on the decline.

The days of hitting .330 are behind him of course...but if he were to play for 8 more seasons...he'd have to average around 150 hits a season. It's not impossible by any means. The problem will be...can he hold up, will he still want to play, and will the Yankees want to keep him around?

This is why it's 99.99% no.

Jeter has too much pride to be confined to a Posada type role this season, I can't see him sitting on the bench or playing DH batting in the bottom of the order while Nunez leads off and starts at SS

I think there is probably a 3% that Jeter passes Rose for the record...Jeter will retire when is contract runs out in 3 years or whatever it is in my opinion.

Pete rose after 16 seasons like the op said had 3164 hits. Derek Jeter had (not counting 1995) had 3076 hits, 88 less hits than pete rose at that point in time.

Pete rose after his 16th season had these seasons to follow. He averaged a mere 134 hits each year over the next 8 years.

If Jeter were to play 8 more seasons and average 147 hits a season, he would break the record by 8 hits. Now it's unlikely he will play 8 more seasons or is it, none of us know  the fucking answer to that question. Speculating about how many more years he will be in the league for won't do you any good. You're not in
Jeters body so you cannot say how he feels. He himself probably doesn't even know how many more years he will end up playing.

But let's say he ends up playing 6 more years he would have to average 195 hits a year in order to break the record by 2 hits. This scenario being more unlikely.

However let's say Jeter plays out his most recent contract with the yankees, and then switches teams(god forbid) or stays with the yankees for 4 or 5 more years he would need to either average 147 hits over 8 years if he can play that long or 195 over 6 years. or something like 164 over 7 years to pass pete rose.


All in all it seems like a doable feat if he decides to play 7 or 8 more years which doesn't seems unlikely at all considering he could switch positions, play dh more etc.. etc...

He has a better chance of getting back with Minka Kelly.

Pete Rose played a lot of games at 1B after he turned 37.  I don;t see Jeter doing this.  I don't think Jeter will have a position to play a few years from now.  I also doubt Rose's record will be important enough to him to make a run at it.  Why risk ruining your legacy hanging around another 6 years?

being a die hard yankee fan it pains me to say NO. unfortunately not enough years or hits left in his career.

considering how he has openly admitted how uncomfortable he was with everything as he was nearing 3K, I can't imagine a 43+ yr old, skills-declining Jeter putting up with all that he would have to to get this record.....really don't think it will mean enough to him

Jeter isnt getting 4200 hits Roses record is untouchable.and for baseball to put a asterik by roses record is just plain stupid what he did after his playing carreer was over had no impact on what he did as a player

saw on the yanks sox game yesterday. jeter is ahead of rose at this stage of his carrer right now. cant remember exactly the number but joe buck pointed it out one time when jeter was at bat.

Just not gonna happen. Pete switched to several positions after start out as a 2B.

Ended up at first base, where you can only play at 40+. He's not moving to 3rd (ARod), or to 1st (Tex), doesn't hit enough to be a DH, and won't hit .300 after age 40.............

For Jeter to do what Pete Rose did that would mean Jeter would have to play til he is 45 years old like Pete. Pete was the player manager at this time and he inserted himself into the lineup everyday.

Jeter will be having hsi contract come up in 2 years and the Yankees are already skeptical of his defense at SS. They are not going to pay him what Jeter is going ot want and especially not to play SS everyday and they arent going to DH when they are the Yankees and can get someone better.

Jeter will not play for another franchise so he will ultimately walk away from teh game.

I will wager a good chunk Jeter doesn't even get to 4000 hits.

over the years I have developed a lot of respect for Jeter despite being a Red Sox fan, with that being said he has no chance

I do love it how the people who say he won't are haters.  It's not the same game as when Rose got the record.
