Poachers kill dozens of elephants, including 33 pregnant females, in Chad

LIBREVILLE, Chad - Poachers killed at least 86 elephants in Chad last week, including 33 pregnant females and 15 calves, conservation groups said on Tuesday, warning that elephants in Central Africa risked being wiped out by such slaughters.

The killing was the worst in the region since more than 300 elephants were slaughtered in Cameroon early last year. Both raids took place during the dry season when poachers armed with automatic weapons launch coordinated attacks on herds of elephants in the region.

Conservationists warn that organised criminal gangs are illegally trafficking huge quantities of tusks to cash in on soaring demand for ivory in Asia.

Wildlife activists are calling for Interpol and the World Customs Association to work together to crackdown on the trade in ivory, issuing heavier penalties for those caught illegally dealing. Poaching has increased recently, fueled by a demand in Asia for jewelry and ornaments. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

The attack was reported to have taken place on March 14-15 in southern Chad, near the border with Cameroon.

"This tragedy shows once again the existential threat faced by Central Africa's elephants," Bas Huijbregts, head of the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) campaign against illegal wildlife trade in Central Africa, said in a statement.

Citing local officials, WWF said the poachers were on horseback and spoke Arabic, suggesting that they were the same group who had been involved in the March 2012 attack that killed more than 300 elephants in northern Cameroon.

While the thread is laudable in terms of exposing poachers, if you eat chicken and support this thread you are engaging in speciesism. You are favoring one species over another, whether human, animal elephant, chicken or otherwise. It's hypocrisy. It's a good cause but so in conflict with your own meat consumption, you don't have a leg to stand on in an attempt to garner sympathy or outrage.

Chickens are arguably the most brutalized animal on this earth and in history. 23 million are killed a day. If they are 'yummy' to you, that's cute, buy don't feel terrible for these elephants as though something wrong is being done here while you willfully support a veritable animal holocaust when you have lunch or dinner.

Why must you do this ? you knucklehead.2 for 1 chicken samwich at BK this monthIts damn near a moral if not legal lean that i chowdown on that deal.THINK OF THE CHICKENS MAN!! If we dont eat them, they wont live, and in the short run, is it not better to have lived?

By the way there ole buddy i am honest as the day is long,painfully so as a matter of fact.I dont even know what OP stands for. Or maybe pain fully ignorant, as you appear to be when comparing the deaths of majestic beasts to (no less important) chickens. Now behave.

Guarantee if you see an elephant gunned down with an Armor piercing AK bullet you'll hold your breath 10 seconds without even realizing it. 

Just part of the sad human/animal death all over the planet. Something might help reduce it. Ultimately I think the slaughter of defenseless animals might trigger compassion throughout the world for human life. Silly... I know.

No. It wasn't a 'chicken killing' rant. It was, as explained above, a thread about speciesism.

I simply got tired of the grossly hypocritical thread where Apache 'gushed' over K-9's, going as far as giving them almost godlike importance (10 commandment reference) while he probably wrote the thread with remnants chicken grease on his hands. 

When he and you come to realize that both species hold absolutely no importance above the outside of what humans artificially have assigned to them for their good pleasure, you'll realize your hypocrisy, and ultimately be quite embarrassed when you do.

But I don't expect that to happen in this lifetime, and this is the only one you have. Good luck and good riddance...

now as for chickens...

1. Dark chicken is bad for the health and white chicken is good.
2. White chicken comes dry whereas the dark chicken comes juicy.
3. Dark chicken has more fat content than the white chicken.
4. The dark chicken has a stronger flavour.
7. The muscles in the dark meat get their energy basically from fat. The White chicken gets its energy from glycogen, which is a polysaccharide of glucose.

Fact is, if elephants were as delicious and economical as a food source like chickens were, they would probably be treated the same. Most humans assign a certain amount of value to animal species that are endangered or near extinction.  You can argue whether that's right all day long, but it is what it is.  

Fact is, humans harvest animals for food.  That's never going to change.

Well for an animal that has the intelligence, memory, emotional capacity, sensitivity, learning abillity and social stucture as a large percentage of humans, I'd say 'majestic' is slightly understated.

Oh and they have gestation period of about 2 years. That's quite a wait for one newborn elephant wouldn't you say?

Sorry chickens,  but some animals are just more worthy of royalty.

Are u being serious here? Chickens are also not endangered species. 

So I guess since someone eats steak or chicken it should be ok to eat horse or dog? I mean thats what you are saying correct?

I think you are a smart person but lack sense. (But according to you that isn't possible either?)
