Look everyone, this is degrading into something that's takes us away from the task at hand. How do we get players deposits back from Beted customers and where can people play with confidence right now. That's what the forum is for. Bodog obviously has it in for us, but bringing others into this mess just creates a much bigger mess, and what will come out of it is no one will have a place to play come football season.

    Everyone, let's get a grip.

I think I can give an unbiased point of view because I didn't lose any money to beted and never had an account with them.

People are mad because they feel covers.com is doing nothing for them .Covers.com was there to take advertising dollars, promote beted, and try to sway customers to beted by saying they were the #1 book to deposit in to.

Now after all this happened those the very same people that trusted covers.com are left with no money while covers.com has pockets filled while advertising money .

I'll be 100% honest, if I told all my friends/ associates that a certain business was the best place to invest in and they lost all their money ,due to a scandal, while I profited from the same situation I would take all the money that I made off the deal and split it equally among the people that lost money until all of our money could be returned .

Now in beted's situation sending the profits to each customer may not cover all the money they are owed but it would show each and every customer you were dedicated to getting their money back ,right now they just have your word .

Freedom@stake do you honestly think covers.com should profit from something you promoted where all the customers lost every dime they had?

I'm sure you could take your profits from beted's advertising and make a good deal with another book within a few days that would get most of the players money back and I believe this would be the right thing to do given the situation.

I would like to hear your take though.

    One at a time please....

MMorris... I arrived in Ireland for a gaming conference / company board meeting when the story broke on Monday night. Had a terrible week trying to manage our situation from there using hotel internet. Got back on Sunday. Spent a day with the family. Spent Monday and Tuesday trying to get information about the situation. Got tired of not knowing anything. On Wednesday morning I booked the next flight I could get... Thursday morning. Flew all day Thursday and had my first meeting with anybody face to face on Friday morning. When I left, the deal was still happening and I was a happy man.

I'm sorry if I didn't act fast enough for you. Keep believing we spiked the deal. You'll be wrong forever, but you are probably used to that feeling by now.

    -----

tlml, I can't help what people are feeling. I'm going to get reamed for saying this, but we are doing everything we can, and it's not easy.

Frankly, the fact that people keep accusing us of being owners of betED only makes things worse. Now, we've got OUR lawyers telling us that we shouldn't be trying to contact the DOJ because that might be perceived as acting on betED's behalf rather than acting on our customers behalf.

Nice work, Calvin Ayre and others. You are really in it for the players, aint ya?

Regardless, we are still trying to at least find out the basic information.

For instance, nobody even knows how much money was seized yet. The Feds haven't released that information even though they have already started spending the money. We don't even know how much the players were owed. How could anybody promise to cover any kind of amount when the total number isn't even known?

And you appear to be assuming, wrongfully, that we have somehow profited off the collapse of betED. No, we haven't. We are actually out a large chunk of advertising revenues and arrears in this fiasco. Literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. We are reorganizing our future business model because of this. If anybody should be angry at betED, it should be us.

Let's put this situation in perspective...

Bridgestone tires were a well-regarded and highly recommended brand during the 80's and 90's. Should those advertisers and reviewers be forced to pay off the lawsuits? I don't think so, but maybe you feel otherwise.

Toyota was the highest rated car company and topped most of the automobile review sites for many years. Should those sites and companies be culpable following Toyota's quality problems that emerged last year?  I don't think so, but maybe you feel otherwise.

Do we regret having had betED at #1?

Obviously, yes. But it was an unforeseeable situation.

Seriously. Everybody forgets that nothing like this had happened before! It's like a scene out of Casino. The DOJ actually ran a sting operation and entrapped them and stole the money! How could we have seen that coming? Blaming us is like blaming a car company for not having a strong enough frame after getting hit by a meteor.

I've mentioned again and again that we had solid reasons for ranking betED at #1. They were a great option for our users. They were below the radar and didn't try to attract attention. They were conservative and didn't take a lot of risks. They were smart and trustworthy. Those reasons had nothing to do with what happened.

If one of the general traditional criteria for recommending sportsbooks was "stability under the duress of a DOJ entrapment and subsequent seizure of bank accounts and domains"? Well, in that case we weren't aware and truly missed the boat and I apologize wholeheartedly.

Hindsight might be 20/20 but if we had the same facts again at the time we had them, we would still be having betED at #1.

Until we see real proof otherwise of their untrustworthiness - and I haven't seen a shred of real proof yet, only baseless rumors - I'm standing by our decision at that time.

Did our decision backfire? Hell, yes! But not every decision works. This is life.

And I still firmly believe that the true culprit here is the American government. They have the money. Yours. Ours. And betED's.

The government stole the money. Not betED.

So Freedom...you never answered timl's question...Why dont you take the hundreds of thousands of dollars that you made from beteds advertising and give it back to the players that were screwed SOLELY BECAUSE of your beted advertising and endorsing???

You claim that you guys are out hundreds of thousands of dollars from beted's closing, so obviously over all the years, you've made prob 10x that amount from beted.  Time to stop acting like a money hungry, selfish, greedy, cheapskate and do the right thing here man...

BET ED was never close to a legitimate' #1' by any independent measurable criteria, it was a C+ book based on all the things that go into ratings (ownership, stability, service, payouts, site, etc) it was promoted as such only due to advertising ties. The fact that the top 10 was not in relation to the facts was pointed out 2-3 years ago by quite a few of us, anyone in the industry for more than a few years knows it would be hiliarious to rate BET ED above BM (former betcris) or the greek both consistently rated for 10+ yrs. In my view covers, although people should do their own research, could eliminate this problem by not rating sportsbooks at all, instead if they are concerned for the well being of visitors to their website, they can simply provide a link to the well known sportsbook review and rating site that does a much more thorough (not to mention independent) job of covering all areas and the reasons for the ultimate ratings, until they do away with their made up top 10 sportsbooks they'll always be tempted to put their hand in the cookie jar

I agree Nostradamus on all points.  I will, however, say that when i got the email offer from beted, I did say to myself...let me do some research.   I came on here and saw that they were ranked #1...so i decided to deposit.  Isnt that how most people research a potantial new book?

If covers would have been honest and say that beted is a C book at best but the only reason that they are ranked #1 is because of advertising dollars, I would have passed on making a deposit.  Thats why covers is PARTIALLY to blame and thats why covers and Freedom need to take SOME responsibility and use all that dirty money that they made over all the years promoting beted and give it back to those that got so royally screwed.

So tell me guys... why do you think they should have been a C book?

Really. The only reason they weren't rated higher at other places was because they didn't advertise there.

Was it a problem with their technology or software? No. Nobody ever said that.

There was never a problem with their ability to pay either. That was never a problem.

A couple of competitors didn't like the fact that they didn't take big bets. So what? That's their business model. They always paid.

This was the first time anybody ever had a serious problem with them.

Really, even when you look at the history of them, there was only one or two disputes that could have been judged either way, but were judged harshly because they weren't advertising.

I guarantee you that the A+ books paying top $$$ wouldn't have been downgraded for those situations. Bodog has more issues than that on a weekly basis.

Bottom line, they were not a bad book. They got caught in a government sting.

So you can hang your hat on the idea they were terrible, and go ahead. I'm not going to convince you otherwise. I'm done trying.

Maybe Beted should or shouldn't be rated a C grade book.  What I think most people are asking is why would you rank Beted higher than some of the other more established, widely accepted, and proven websites out there?  I'm referring to books that many experienced gamblers use and books that are ranked high on many other sites.

The reason is simple...advertisement dollars.  While that is no fault of Covers to make money it is very unfair to players who trusted the top 10 list to be unbiased and reflective of industry standards.  I don't know the exact order of the rankings, but I'm curious to know what books 2-5 were last year and whether they were books considered to be top quality by most people.  Players should of done their research, true, but Covers is what a lot of people had considered a quality site to get this kind of information.

From what I've heard, other sites had Beted listed from a range of below average to slightly above average.  These same sites had a lot of the same books in their highest rated lists.  I mean there was a CONSENSUS on which books were the cream of the crop.  Is this due only to advertising dollars from these top books on ALL of these sites and the lack of advertising from Beted?  If this is the case, then Covers really isn't at fault here but all of these sites should take a serious look on how they are treating their viewers/members.  However, if the books were ranked high on most of these sites because of actual research and feedback, and that's why Beted wasn't ranked that high...then wtf Covers.  Like I said, though, I'm not sure what the 2-5 spots looked like last year so if they included all of these other "great" books then I guess no big deal.

Getting back to your points.  Yes the software was decent, payouts were usually good, and customer service was usually decent as well.  Does this justify them making the top 10 or maybe top 5 list (even without considering advertisements and such)...certainly.  Even if Beted was still running today, I just feel for a book to be endorsed as the "number 1 book" they should be a book that most longtime gamblers stake their trust in (which according to what I've read even before this whole thing, isn't the case with Beted) and a book that is known for a great reputation among many other sources.  I believe that would be fair to the people who use and trust Covers for information concerning sports betting.

To finish...keep up the efforts!  Definitely not hating on what you have been doing...just giving my feelings toward Beted being number 1.  I'm sure we would all like to know how much the DOJ actually seized and I'm sure you'll keep us posted if and when they squeak out that information.

It's not about them being terrible you had them labeled #1 sportsbook And you have Lou over there touting everyone to try em out when they had issues with another book. Combine this with their incredible deposit bonus and a few weeks later whamo shit hits the fan. Now the shit hitting the fan isn't directly your responsibility, but luring naive customers into this mess is whether you want to admit it or not that is the truth.

Feels like I'm fighting a lost cause here as I had no money either way involved but Beted never was #1 and you got to be the biggest bs'er to sit there and say otherwise. They were #1 to fill your coffers perhaps. Best deal you struck up.

Now you are in business to make money which is fine and noble, but remember who butters that bread. Your sportsbook list is a joke to EVERYONE now not just those who've been around the block. It probably will be harder to get newbies to try those "top" books out from your links as word spreads.

IF I was in charge to prevent this from happening I would not only say what a fluke thing this was, but to save face offer money from this same ad. pool (that in all likelihood has paid Covers millions)  pay back players at least partially, so they can trust the bs top sportsbook rankings and keep providing future revenue from the provided links. Think about it, and offer me a job after you do the right thing.

    damon and trump,

I've also said this before, and I know nobody will believe it, but betED was NOT our highest paying advertiser.

In fact, in the entire time they have been on our site, only in 2010 were they even in our top three highest paying advertisers.

Lots of people refuse to believe it, and I can understand it, but that's the case.

We take a long view around here about ways to run our business, and we learned a lot of lessons in the past.

One lesson we learned is that the #1 slot on our site has to be sacred and has to be a company we have a great relationship with. Otherwise the negatives outweigh any benefits that might come from the few extra dollars you might make.

There was always enough money to be made from the rest of the list that we could keep that #1 spot to a company that we knew was a solid operation that would fit the needs of our users and would work with us and viewed the relationship as a win-win.

betED was perfect for that, until the DOJ stepped in.

Jake, Let me ask you how you know exactly how much money the government took?

I'd like to know, because that information has never been released.

If beted owed covers hundreds of thousands of dollars at the exact time of their demise, then one could only imagine how much money covers made off of beted over the last 5 years...or even longer.

Freedom...take some of that dirty money out of your grubby pockets, stop being a selfish greedy ----, and do the right thing here man.  There are so many people here AND across the street that know what the right thing for you guys to do is.

Sorry Freedom, but in my opinion BetED were the top rated book on this site simply because they paid you the most money.
In reality they were never a top book (although they were not a scam book either).
You can't compare them to Legendz and Bookmaker for example.

You are obviously hoping to take a little flake, delete the most abusive threads, and hope the whole thing goes away, and unfortunately that is what will probably happen.

Fair enough.  It is just a shame that Beted did not (and has not) communicated to its players when this whole thing happened.  They didn't even pay their employees.  They should of scrambled to try and find a bailout ASAP (and later on got one but decided to explore other options apparently looking out for the players best interest...then decided to screw the players again by not taking any deals after randomly having a change of heart on the legal ramifications of making one).  If all of their money actually was taken then its also a shame that they didn't have the sense or know-how to properly manage their money by spreading their funds throughout a variety of sources/banks (hence not worthy of number 1).  I know you would take back them being number 1 so bravo.  I just do not believe any widely known top sportsbook would of been hit so hard like this where they did not have some kind of reserve stash to give players their due.

What is really sketchy is the timing of the latest 100% reload bonus.  I know you've said they had no way of seeing this coming.  I don't think we have heard your thoughts on the latest 100% reload bonus, Freedom.  Was it simply a case of hysterical coincidence?

On a side note...Tiger Woods has endorsements?

Freedom actually claimed that it was beted's turn in the rotation to offer a large bonus.  Thats almost laughable.  Again, just Freedom spinning the truth.  Ive gotten promotional emails from beted for over 3 years and have NEVER gotten a 100% offer...that is up until they knew they were closing.

They offered this bonus starting on the Friday before they closed up shop.  But you only got this bonus is you deposited thru w-u. m-g, or visa.  They did this because an e-check would have taken a few days to clear and that wouldnt have worked knowing that they were closing 2-3 days later.  Once they picked up your w-u or m-g, it was in their pockets and gone forever.

Way too sketchy that they normally take e-check but didn't for that particular bonus.  Also sketchy that it was a 100% deposit bonus that apparently wasn't offered before.  Info like this would make almost anyone believe they knew this was coming and saw this as an opportunity to rake in some last minute dollars before going into hiding, never to be heard from again.  They may have known where and how bad they would be hit by the DOJ and cut their losses and taken off with the rest.

Obviously, we have no idea to prove this is true or not (and neither does Freedom).  We know accounts were seized, we don't know the amounts though.  All we can do is speculate for now but at times the evidence (100% bonus, no e-check, no communication to players, not accepting a bailout when they had a chance to) seems to point to Beted being the ones truly at fault here, maybe just as much as the DOJ for how they have handled this situation.

Superbeets...He is putting so many spins on all the facts that Im getting dizzy.  I want results (as many others do as well).  If covers made xxx amount of dollars advertising for a book that closed up shop and ran off with people funds, and the only resaon some of these people deposited there in the first place if because of covers, then Freedom needs to step up, act like a man, quit being so damn cheap, and take care of these unfortunate players that got screwed because of covers recommendations.

Id love to know how much money covers made off of beted over all the years.  If covers was owed a couple hundred thousand just at the time of them closing (as Freedom claims), then lifelong money must be in the millions.  Time to act like a man and give a little back.  Its not rocket science.

rich, all I said was that was their story.

We do regular weekly promos and it was betED's turn. A bunch of US sites had just left the market, so it was an opportunity to grab those customers. So they put up a sweet offer.

The timing was terrible, but it's a reasonable story.

    Believe it or not.

Then why did they addemantly claim that in order to receive this outrageous bonus, you had to do a p2p transfer, instead of an echeck?
