Bodog got out of the US in '06. When they did, Mohawk approached them about licensing their name to use for their sportsbook and that's what's been going on since then. Basically Bodog's a known name and Mohawk paid for the privilege of using it but when the deal expires at the end of the year, Bodog's not going to renew. It's almost like when Subway franchisees pay Subway to use the name. The franchisee still owns the shop and operates it, but they get the name brand recognition and loyalty of Subway customers.
It's not at all like Subway, Shari. Subway is not engaged in criminal activity in the US. And Bodog never got out of the US or out of criminal responsibility for what it was doing there. If Pablo Escobar had trademarked "Pablo's Powder" and licensed its distribution to a bunch of Indians, would he be invited for tea at the White House? Would the indictments against him have been dropped?

Really, Shari. I don't think Subway is an apt analogy. Subway, last I heard, wasn't carrying on a criminal activity in the US. And, Bodog didn't stop doing business in the US in 2006. Do you seriously thing that transparently idiotic "franchising" bullshit fools American authorities? If Pablo Escobar had only branded "Pablo's Powder" and had others distribute it, licensed them to, do you seriously think he wouldn't have been gutshot on a rooftop in Bogota?

Paddy- I hate to piss in your strawberries and cream but Bodog was doing nothing ilegal by taking wagers from US customers. The US government has no jurisdiction over an offshore gaming company licensed and/or chartered in a sovereign nation. British books like bet365 never should have exited the US market but everyone knows the Brits lay down if a light breeze blows through the country.

I'm on the same wavelength as you, Lovesoccer, but Bodog is doing illegal things in the US and there certainly is at least one indictment out on Calvin Ayre. You are right that it shouldn't be illegal, but the fact is it is. That's why the US government is holding money that belongs to some of the posters on here.
Just in case you might not think I have any personal knowledge of this, have a read here.
