Bitcoins-how does it work

I was thinking about trying bitcoins how does it work has anyone used it and give example of your payout experience say for instance u withdraw 500$ bitcoin by time it gets to your bank was it still 500$? Or where there a lot of fees  is there a catch somewhere ?
