please don't be as naive, immature, and plain dumb as the people close to the Penn State program that are questioning the penalty, and why their school did not negotiate or say they would appeal.
PUNITIVE - it punishes the school for the cover up.
CORRECTIVE - it moves to correct the culture in UNhappy Valley so they do not do this again.
DETERRENT - it serves as an example to every other school in the nation, should a situation like this ever come up again. if you think Sandusky is the only child molester with access to a college campus shower, guess again.
and last:
PENN STATE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN MORE OF A PR NIGHTMARE HAD THEY QUESTIONED THE PENALTY AND TRIED TO APPEAL OR NEGOTIATE IT.
THE BEST MOVE WAS TO ACCEPT THE ENTIRE PENALTY AND BEGIN THE HEALING AND REBUILDING PROCESS RIGHT NOW.
BY TRYING TO NEGOTIATE A LIGHTER PENALTY OR APPEAL, PENN STATE WOULD BE DEFENDING A DEFENSELESS CRIME.
some of you are just so clueless it is unbelievable to share the same earth with you.
i never knew how many unintelligent people there were in the world.
it is so sad.

there is no evidence it does anything to deter or correct.
and what exactly is a "culture"? sounds like an espn buzzword.
ten years from now this will be forgotten, and some big time program will be shielding a serial killer or drug kingpin.

another non sequitur comparing smu to penn st, but since you brought it up--miami has more violations every two years than smu had in that decade--the ncaa just keeps them hidden.
and smu was a nothing program that had 15 minutes of fame and was going to go back to being a nothing program again once dickerson and james graduated.

your ignorance is unbelievable. no school in the HISTORY of college football did as much illegal recruiting with cash payments, cars, other gifts, etc, than SMU did in the early to mid 80's. not even Miami, USC, Oklahoma, none of them, did it to the degree that SMU did.
and did you not follow college foots in the mid 90's when probation and sanctions damn dropped Univ of Miami football into the toilet for about 5 years?
are you not paying attention now as Miami is getting investigated and has upcoming sanctions yet again?
you're just another clueless Penn St homer who cannot handle the truth.
well, the reality is here and the reality is your team is EFFING done for the next 5-7 years at least.
it will be 10 years before you make it back strong.

Doesn't anyone see the irony here? In deriding Penn State, the NCAA said that it was necessary to deliver its punishment in order to correct a culture where athletics had become too big, too important. And yet, right now, there are literally scores of coaches from schools across the country camped out on Penn State's campus stalking the football players like hungry packs of wolves. The NCAA sanctioned this. Unreal. How can anyone take the NCAA seriously? Don't mistake what I'm saying, the players have every right to leave and I wouldn't blame them if they did. But there is no reason the NCAA should allow this to go on in the manner that it's occurring. It completely slaps the face of what they are supposedly trying to correct. I also find it interesting that the NCAA was already caught in a lie after only one day. Penn State admin stated that the NCAA threatened the death penalty so they basically had to accept the punishment. The NCAA prez came out immediately and said that wasn't true. Then the next day, guess what? He admits that it was true. Is this really the proper organization that should be dealing with this mess? I think not. The NCAA is nothing but a corrupt, self-serving, hypocritical organization.

You are clueless- You think the heavy sanctions Penn St. had put on them will not "deter" any other programs from covering something up? Get a grip- there is no evidence that it doesn't- accept it and move on

I think they overstepped their bounds; however, I can't fault them for it, they saw and opportunity and took it. I think it's a simple case of the NCAA deciding they're tired of being a joke and saw a perfect opportunity to get some good press.
People can bitch but in the end of the day you'll always have a majority cause you can't do wrong punishing a child molester.
Now it's back to irrelevance and punishing coaches for buying their recruits a milkshake.

smu had a few monor violations that people like skip bayless made out to be so much more. miami and usc do the same or worse every year.
you guys just can't accept the fact that paterno is still the winningest coach, despite "official" ncaa changes.
you are DEAD FUCKING WRONG,
i was a fan of JoePa since i first started watching CFB in the early 80's, he was not just the gold standard, he was the standard above and above the gold standard,
but the Freeh report interviewed 450 ppl and went through 3.5 million emails, no doubt using keywords to sift through the ones that Joe wrote, or that his wishes were expressed in, and i have ZERO DOUBT:
THAT JOE PA KEPT THE SANDUSKY FROM GETTING TO THE AUTHORITIES BECAUSE HE KNEW IT WOULD BRING SHAME TO HIS FOOTBALL PROGRAM, HIS LEGACY, AND TO PENN STATE,
HE CHOSE HIS FOOTBALL PROGRAM, HIS LEGACY, AND PENN STATE OVER THE INNOCENCE AND PROTECTION OF YOUNG CHILDREN WHO COULD NOT DEFEND THEMSELVES,
THAT'S WHY HE WAS FIRED,
THAT'S WHY HE SAID "I WISH I HAD DONE MORE, IT IS ONE OF THE GREAT SORROWS OF MY LIFE"
THAT'S WHY HE GOT CANCER
THAT'S WHY HE DIED,
FACE THE FACTS YOU MENTAL MIDGET

Penn St. HAD NO CHOICE but to accept their penalty. If not, they were facing FOUR years of the Death Penalty!!
Either way, the investigation left them no choice but to accept...kind of like those young children had no choice but to be sickly molested. Penn St. seriously needs to shut their mouths! If not, more digging will happen. I'm pretty sure they do not want that...I gurantee it!!

The difference between SMU and other schools was not the sheer number of violations....but that they refused to stop when ordered... They were one of the few dumb enough to sign players to contracts....they had a payroll to meet!.....and they felt they couldn't stop the payments as these were legal contracts..... I graduated the same year as Dickerson and James and was recruited by SMU....ALL schools in the Southwest conference gave cars and cash..... *I actually overheard .....the phone call to the car dealer (Aggie booster).....when told that Dickerson was keeping the car...(from A&M)...but going to SMU *very racially insensitive let's just say.....
SMU got caught because they game money to a druggie....and then had to kick his sorry ass off the team.....plus Dallas at the time had 2 super competitive newspapers....with writers pounded the campus hard looking for a story ... *and Meyer and boosters were way too cocky /flashy
It is better to be feared - than to be loved.

First...he has ties to PSU and should have never gotten the job....besides a conflict of interest....as director of the FBI (appointed by Clinton '93-2001)....Freeh presided over one of the worst times of corruption and COVER-UP in US history.... and now he's the guy not only trusted to do this right...but standing in judgement of Paterno and PSU?........holy shit *There are MANY would argue this bastard is worse than Sandusky ....seriously .....because if you stood in the way of the FBI in those days....your ass was about to disappear......
those not familiar.....just start googling when you've got a minute.... at the mountain of dirt
Waco Ruby Ridge/Randy Weaver Lon Horiuchi (his personal sniper kinda sorta) TWA flt 900 OKC bombing / Kenneth Trentadue Filegate/Hillary Clinton Montana Freeman Richard Jewell/Olympic Park VINCE FOSTER Robert Hanssen Wen Ho Lee Knights of Columbus/Opus Dei.....questionable
*note > at Waco....he is often "credited" with ordering the gassing and subsequent death of 80 people or so (including 20 children)....but that was in April or May...he didn't even get the job until September...so unfortunately we can't pin that one on him (just the cover-up).....

Every students gets the same education that they got before. The football team did not lose any tv rights. They can still have a full stadium and play football every week. And any student at Penn State can transfer to any other school and not lose the year.
People move and change jobs all the time. It is not a punishment. The punishment is on the football program itself so far, the more harsher punishments will come with the criminal phase.
