2016 Record: 29-11
That pick is now here. Sometimes it takes a full year for a pick to ripen. But when it does, your patience will pay off for waiting.
The pick:
Colorado State -4.5 over New Mexico
Destroyers aren't the only way to win a war. They are used in war, but what about the beloved rowboat?
The rowboat cannot fall to shot of a torpedo.
The rowboat can safely go ashore, with no damage.
The rowboat saves the lives of the men who abandon ship.
The Titanic fell to the icy grip of the glacier. The rowboat stood firm.
Here we use the rowboat instead of the Destoyer. I've written much today so I'll make this short.
1. New Mexico has been dancing with the devil. That dance will soon end. Now they will dance for us.
7 wins. A bowl. A season of great achievement for UNM.
But the way they have done it? On thin ice, escaping by the thinnest of margins against poor competition. They will not do so here against CSU.
The last three dances haven't gotten more out of step.
Shaky Win #1: Game 8 @ Hawaii.
The game I start with is game 8: Hawaii has had a nice little season. But have tailed off of late. UNM played them neck and neck for 3.5 quarters then a 46 yard fumble return by UNM with 8 minutes left gave them a 28-21 win and that first dancing with the devil win. Hawaii threatened but couldn't capitalize.
Shaky Win #2: Game 9 vs. Nevada.
Nevada has the worst run defense in the nation. The WORST. Despite this, Nevada lead 14-7 at the half in a game UNM absolutely needed at the time for a bowl at the time.
Then the heavens opened up. All UNM does is run. They are the #1 Run offense team in the nation. An hour and a half rain delay soaked the field and made the RB's tougher to bring down. The result? UNM ran for almost 400 yards. Despite this, and being 15 point favorites: the game sat at 28-26 with 2:57 remaining. A final TD made the score 35-26 and the Nevada victory chance was gone.
Nevada was playing quite strong up until that storm and despite UNM facing the worst rush defense, they could not close the door without weather and a clock eating final drive to seal the deal. An unimpressive win over a lousy team that could have easily gone the other way.
Shaky Win #3: Game 10 vs. Utah State
Finally, last week vs. Utah State, the win, or should I say escape, was the shakiest of all. And UNM benefitted from incredibly inept coaching and favorable officiating.
Up 21-3, Utah State was cruising to victory. Slowly, UNM crept back into the game due to a litany of Utah State errors.
Then at 21-21 and the ball on the UNM 1 yard line, with 5 minutes left, the Utah State coach decided to go for the TD on 4th down instead of kicking a FG. Huge mistake. He was stopped and UNM drove the field and kicked a FG with about 1:14 left.
