Early Season betting ideas.....


WHY HAVE A PLAN?......you say

 "but BRO.....I kick azz the way I do it...go with my (substantial)  gut > let her rip !"

$    SIMPLE....you will NOT win money LONG TERM this way....
            *  a lack of accurate record keeping helps you fool yourself no doubt
          
  Do it right?....it's actually tough to lose money
    
NOTE:    Using..... ONE year or even TWO....of success as a 'justification' for ignoring many of the basics....(likely) means you are either VERY young.....or an IDIOT
      $  like the MANY guys here that will argue that seeking VALUE in wagering...."is really not that important"......  
  *seems like...in one thread we had 2-3 guys arguing in vain wtf FOR VALUE in wagering.....overwhelming opinion was it's a waste of time........................ran off my man Wiseguy with that nonsense (40+ years or so of betting experience)


1)     STAY AWAY FROM UNCERTAINTY
            *  the more a team returns.....the easier it is to predict how they will play >> SIMPLE
            *  WHY.....would you ignore an entire season of 'evidence'...and start over each year?
            *  a team loses a bunch of guys....and / or has a new staff....why not simply wait and see how they play?       
                   
   $     A new HC can :
      1)   SLOWLY make the changes he wants....team might look similar
      2)   Tear it down / start over.........team is maybe much worse   
                           
  RETURING STARTERS?...
       *.the most misunderstood / misused aspect of handicapping CFB?......
          *most back?... (HC / QB + 15 starters or so)....simply tells you they will (probably) look a lot like the previous team....not that they will be MUCH BETTER!
          ** if improvement has been steady > you can conclude they're likely stronger ....no pattern is apparent?...maybe avoid
           *key?.....how good is the guy replacing the lost starter....he might be a helluva lot better

         ***  OCCASIONALLY.....a team will get WEIRD....and be a whole lot better or worse...than they should be (like Colorado LY)
         $  so what?....the plan is sound > stay with it

2)  Ignore (most) bowl results and spring practice crap...they are EXHIBITION games for the most part
      *later bowls?....where BOTH teams are fully motivated...sure you can make a few conclusions
  
    THAT'S RIGHT.......coaches often STAGE the spring game
       * offense stinks?....it's important the fans see some improvement / give players some confidence (esp if season ticket sales are lacking)  


3)  Some teams are ALREADY in school...some start much later
         *those not in school are not restricted practice wise like those with school is session

   hint: c/p                _____2017 fall class schedule or calendar

        eg.   looking at an east coast team (many start early)......as a (road) favorite vs a west coast team (often start late)....better check it could make a difference
     

4)     FBS vs FCS -  your 1st look (most always)...should be to the the smaller school
       *most blindly bet the big school ...so usually the spread is a few points higher than it should be
         $$ some HC's love to beat the helll outta the weaker team (when they can)...some could care less
        *some FCS teams are highly motivated and play hard for 4 quarters...some are there to pick up a check (especially if a big game on deck)

HOW TO DO IT



 WHY............does most everybody LOSE MONEY?

  *AX anyone here?.....they'll say well they don't follow the rules
                TRUE.....buy why not?
  
One reason?............without a doubt......OUCH
  *is because you don't have the GUTS.....to try and do your best.................
  ** sure some guys don't have the time

Meaning.....as long as you half-azz it...you can ALWAYS say...."well I could really kick azz if I only tried"
  *every single one of my buddies say this....pusssies........
 
You'll have to think about this one a bit.....it's a way to relieve pressure
 

INDEED......
 The FEAR of.....and INABILITY to deal with FAILURE / REJECTION..... is maybe the biggest obstacle we face
      *which is totally ridiculous....because we all fail at some point
     
Have a few bad weeks?... POOF !.......you're questioning yourself....EVERYBODY is calling you an idiot
        
     1)       WHY TF .........let the basterds get you down?
     2)       HOW....is feeling sorry for yourself gonna make you money?

BUT................  GOOD NEWS ?......unlike most other things.... you simply apply yourself you WILL make money
   



TRY.....and make this as simple as possible

1)   What SHOULD the line be anyway?
        *am I getting a good deal?.....or am I getting screwed?

2)   Know the NUMBER you want (or team if you must) BEFOREHAND......
         * OFTEN.....meaning taking notes Saturday / WORKING all day SUNDAY
         *try to be 2-3 weeks ahead.....or more
        *the goal being ready to take advantage of opening numbers

3)   Know WHEN / WHERE you can bet it...you should have at least THREE places to bet
        1.   cheesy (greatness) book like BetOnline....that may offer soft lines.....and/or local
        2.   book with many options like 5Dimes
       3.   'solid'  book like Bookmaker /  Heritage /  Pinnacle 
        KEY:   knowing which way the line will (likely) move is HUGE

IF you don't know what the (correct) line is to begin with...good luck

WARNING:      waiting until late in the week....checking out who likes what....betting after lines have 'settled' (say Tuesday or so).....or have closed (close to kick-off) virtually ASSURES you will lose money (long term)
    *  of course....MANY will INSIST they half-azz it....bet all favorites late and do just fine.....all this means is that you were LUCKY / have not placed enough bets for an adequate sample size

4)   Know HOW MUCH you will bet (write it down)
         *ROUGHLY 1-2% of your bankroll...slightly more maybe if you're pretty good / less if you stink
              don't give yourself the OPTION of crazy / emotional bets > write the amount down > stick with it
        WHY.....is this (bet size) important?......because this allows you to lose plenty of bets.....without running outta cash
       IDEA:   digging into the subconscious again sorry.......KNOWING YOUR LIMITATIONS.....is huge beyond words.....seriously

NOTE:    YOU CANNOT......'CONTROL' YOUR BIAS.....

5)   The more ways you can breakdown a match-up...the more money you win........PERIOD
          *  IMO....the SPOT is of utmost importance.....
 
   ie. :  how has this team (under same coach) performed in this same spot?
                  
   $$  It's not simply a situational thing....(off loss / travel / lookahead...).....but HOW has this coach PREPARED his team given this situation?
         note:  'spot'......covers situational and technical issues.....I prefer psychological and history
         *match-up you bet is HUGE.....but takes a tremendous amount of time.....and is POORLY understood
         AND.......match-up stuff is most easily detected anyway....therefore often reflected in the line.....while an ACCURATE assessment of the SPOT......is very poorly understood.....therefore maybe missed...............
            
     $$$$$$  BUT......analytical stuff.....as in the greatness of Bill Connelly.....is  OFTEN not reflected in the pointspread
      
   WHY?.....most folks hate math and reject it's application..... 
                         
       HINT:    the stuff that Phil gives you is great...but is likely to be in the line anyway....Bill C?.....not yet
 
 
6)      THE MOST IMPORTANT thing for me?......
  *avoid at all costs....handicapping a match-up 'standing alone' < tough as hell

  Meaning there is always a BIG PICTURE.....that tells the story
     
What does THIS game REALLY MEAN?......to each coach / team
    
GOAL when season began?.....
  *  to make a bowl?  >  a 'meaningless' FCS game maybe huge now...
   *  to win the conference?  > non-conf games forget it......
   *  to make play-offs > win national title?.....long season / HC might just wanna win the game.....pick his spots / avoid peaking early 
    
$ For some reason.....folks have a tough time accepting we SELDOM do our absolute best.....
      * a cfb team?.....bunch of 18-22 year old babies (essentially)....may have 2-3-4 great weeks each SEASON
                
     $  a SMART head coach.....knows when to push the correct buttons
             eg.   Les Miles to me is a guy that did a great job getting  his team ready....BUT about the same for each game....so maybe they didn't have enough left in the tank (emotionally) when needed
            
*look at SABAN....URBAN....and DABO.....how often do we see them really EXTENDING their team in a game they're gonna win anyway?
       note;  Urban in the past was incredible in non-conf games.....slipped a bit recently.....Saban could care less but still usually covers with an incredibly vanilla game plan
 

          $$$$$$  when thinking MOTIVATION......don't think gameday.....think of the WEEK of PREPARATION instead
        *how FOCUSED were they.......during the week......NOT gameday.....fired up
              and.... think PLAYERS......not coaches or fans wtf


7)     LEARN TO USE YOUR OWN IDEAS....
        try to rely on OTHERS opinions...a bit less each year
          *if you only use other's opinions...you'll never get better / only more confused
 
8)     Don't be a cheerleader...be CRITICAL
        *don't be a crystal ball type handicapper...you JUST KNOW Texas is gonna be great this year.....WHY?
         
If you can't EXPLAIN in simple terms why...shouldn't bet it...
      *.a hunch play every now and then is fine....a card full of hunches (goin' with my gut man!) is stupid
  
9)     Play on a team BEFORE they get better...not AFTER
         *     put in the work....find teams that are (probably) better or worse....than they appear
               that way you can stay ahead of the line / not simply REACT to a strong / weak performance

But now and then a really good capper who isn't such a greedy liar as the rest comes along and  gives you information which gives you an edge above break even. 

You could be disciplined, you could profit.

breaking down the keys to handicapping like no other.....more importantly cashing tickets long term....err based on last couple years should just go with your plays...enjoy the handicapping too much though and since making money we'll stick with it....probably would be advisable for the 97% losing long term though....always amazed how many with no record of long term results...err or short term... simply don't 'invest' in someone's picks who wins long term....I'm sure there are some out there that use them and ignore their own thoughts....just not nearly as many as should....err on second thought probably better most people lose to keep the offshore books well funded and happy to pay out the very small percentage winning.....best of luck this year buddy

  *NI just doesn't play as well in NC games.....or at home
             9-12 ATS at home vs 20-6 away......8-11 in NC games vs 22-12 in MAC play......1-5 ATS in home / NC games

  *BC?...finding W's hard to come by in the now TOUGH ACC....they MUST win this one......and play well on the road (12-5 ATS run) and in NC games (9-5) 


Florida?.....a BIASED view here maybe......YES I'm aware Harbaugh and DC Brown do a tremendous job....BUT
  *LOOK.....at Michigans schedule LY......annihillated the bad teams sure....when playing somebody that could fog up a mirror....not that impressive IMO...... now most of that team?.....is gone

Could be wrong.....but I just don't see how Michigan is favored here at all......odds-makers required here to make too big of an  adjustment I reckon.....thinking it's bet down to pick 'em at some point ?????
       **  also like the (recent) memory of a 41-7 Citrus Bowl beatdown in 2015
  NOTE:  'revenge'.....is taken to mean : man Florida is gonna be ANGRY !....PAYBACK TIME !......
    *  .nope just a (usually small) edge in preparation as Michigan maybe takes them a bit lighter than they might otherwise (SEC is overrated stuff)......Gators (otherwise cocky as helll)...now humbled a bit > maybe work harder / now aware that the 'inferior' B10 is capable of beating their azz......

             note:  TCU QB F. Sawyer.....should start / maybe upgrade?....but LY QB (coach's son) signed NFL UFA contract seems like

Ponies?.....have had a VERY tough schedule (1st 2 yrs under Morris)
   $$  THIS.....will be their FIRST opportunity to POUND somebody.....have a great (much needed)...' feel good'  home romp   
    * with only N Texas on deck....they should start a nice run here.....as schedule is much more forgiving....replacing Baylor...USF and Temple.....with Ark St...UConn....and Cinn



Oregon St?
  * I like the spot here....CSU with their biggest GOY on deck (minds of players)....new stadium seems to (often) be a distraction instead of + MO

 *Beavs?..../ only Portland St on deck / tough road ahead....off 2 win / 4 win seasons...Anderson can't afford to lose here

KEY?....CSU is a very small / quick team....while Oreg State....is HUGE
  *RB Nall at 240 plus 3 other quality backs running behind an OL av 6-5 / 325 or so.....TCU transfer T Johnson....Oregon transfer Tyner?......and Pierce (5.3/rush).....WR 6-4...6-5...6-3 (if Collins starts)

  *CSU DL > 270 > 270 - 330 < 245.......LB not bad....DB short / small
      
Same on the reverse.....Beav D huge....CSU tiny RB / WR's
  *Anderson likes a very physical style of play.....like at UtahSt (14-2 road dog too) and  Wisky (1-1)

PLUS.....recall.....last time seen (after getting HOT).....CSU was getting pounded by Idaho (scored what 30+  points in garbage time to make it appear close)...Beavs were beating Oregon and Zona (42-17 / -3)
  * I think HEALTHY.....they are better than most think
      note:   finished #65 S&P LY...ahead of Georgia and Kentucky

BA,  With you on B.C., S.M.U., and Colo. St. +8.  
I think Kansas-22 and Mizz.-21.5 are solid plays.  Both improved playing against bottom feeders in their respective conferences.
