GAME NOTES: The Virginia Tech Hokies of the ACC and the Georgia Bulldogs of the SEC will meet in Athens this evening. Virginia Tech is fresh off a 79-70 triumph over Navy on Sunday. The Hokies are now 5-3 on the season, and tonight's clash marks their first true road game of the season. The three losses suffered by the squad have come by a grand total of seven points, proof that they have been extremely competitive in defeat. As for Georgia, it has suffered back-to-back defeats since opening the season with wins in five of the first six outings. On Saturday, the Bulldogs dropped a 76-42 decision to Illinois, and that setback was preceded by a four-point loss to Western Kentucky. Georgia owns a 4-1 series lead over Virginia Tech, including four straight wins over the Hokies.
Virginia Tech is scoring 70.4 ppg this season while allowing 65.9 ppg to the opposition. The Hokies are led by A.D. Vassallo, who is scoring 18.4 ppg to go along with 6.6 rpg and 3.9 apg. Malcolm Delaney adds 16.4 ppg to the mix, and Jeff Allen is contributing 15.0 ppg in addition to his team-high 8.8 rpg. In the victory over Navy last time out, Delaney hit all 11 of his shots from the foul line and finished with 21 points. Allen and Vassallo both contributed 17 points, and Hank Thorns netted 10 points. Virginia Tech was a disappointing 2- of-13 from three-point range, but a 29-of-34 showing from the charity stripe certainly helped the cause. Also, the Hokies earned a 45-28 rebounding advantage.
Georgia is not an explosive offensive team by any means, as the squad is generating only 62.2 ppg on 41.5 percent shooting from the floor. Fortunately, the Bulldogs have been able to limit opponents to 59.6 ppg on 40.8 percent overall shooting. Terrance Woodbury is the leading scorer for Georgia with his 13.1 ppg, but his 38.1 percent shooting from the field is disappointing. Also, the fact that Woodbury has only dished out four assists in eight games while committing 22 turnovers suggests that there is a great deal of room for improvement in his game. Woodbury scored 13 points against Illinois on Saturday, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over 27 times in that game and shot 35.3 percent from the floor, including 2-of-12 from three-point range.
Expect the Hokies to win this game on the road, and Georgia looked absolutely awful in the loss to Illinois last time out.
