dumb question but what do the numbers mean in front of the team name?

depending on your bookie, they are the team numbers/ tags

 they are game numbers and each team gets a discrete number per game. It's been used by the books for years to more easily discern and communicate bets. For example, if you walk up to a betting counter and say you want $500 on 872 they would know exactly what you were saying.

Las Vegas rotation numbers. It makes the teams easier to find when you have a lot of games. Being a BM in the past they are critical in CBB. Not so much in any other sport though. I used to order 50 books from Vegas back in the 80's to give to my clients.
