Top Ten Fighters Of All Time

 

Don't really think Tyson could ever be considered Top 10 pound for pound EVER.  Hard to really put him in the Top 10 Heavyweights.  If so, it would be the bottom half.  Remember, Iron Mike only really had 6 good years then got his ass handed to him in the 90's.  Don King ruined him.

The guy was a time-bomb no matter what. Yes, Don King did the same to him as he did to others.. Screw them Over! Mike Tyson was the first to unify the big three (WBA,WBC & IBF). Although the IBF wasn't major until 1984. The WBO was around 1989 and the only person that won a WBO title at the beginning that I was impressed with was Michael Moorer. I'm sure it's quoted somewhere but I remember Emanuel Steward stating to Michael Moorer at light heavyweight that he would be a champ within one year of his pro-debut and he did on his 12th fight. Moorer was 22-0 at light heavyweight with all knockouts and then he added 4 more straight KO wins at heavyweight (26 straight KOs). Back to Mike Tyson (AKA: Iron, The Baddest Man on the Planet, Mighty), his nearly 4 year championship reign was impressive with 9 title defenses and 6 were all three belts. After prison Mike wasn't the same, but it was just icing on the cake. He even stated he lost his passion for boxing before that. Even Ali wasn't the same although he produced some of his greatest fights after his forced retirement. Ali was so fast prior to Frazier it was menacing to opponents. Tyson brought a fear to other heavyweights that only Liston produced, the only man Foreman said he feared.

When we discuss heavyweights and greatest pound-for-pound, one of the greatest accomplishments in sports history was Joe Louis being champ nearly 12 years with 25 title defenses, that is truly astonishing. I had to add that in there as I'm sure most are aware of it but no one seemed to mention it.

another book worth a read is the psycho-social, chemical, biological, and electro-magnetic manipulation of human consciousness  by valdamar valerian and although I do not agree with about 50 percent of It the other 50 percent is worth the time.

Like I stated, I'm not a deep believer in conspiracy theories. Most is hype. Yes 1% of the people in the world own 99% of it, which is not a suprise to anyone who is somehwhat knowlegdeable. 100 years ago Vilfredo came up with the concept of the 80/20 rule, better know as the Pareto Principle. The middle-east has 3 major religions conlicting in a small area, and all have claims to the same thing.

the word conspiracy is a difficult one for me, I know that almost every thing that we are being told is a lie, their is more truth in what many call conspiracy, than what to many is called the truth.

this blog was once about the top 10 fighters of all time and on that note another current guy that I did not mention previous was yuriorkus gamboa, he really has the skills and talent to crack to top 25 ever, but he most likely turned pro too late and does not have enough time to accomplish all that is needed to do that. but the skills and talent are there, I do not see anyone beating him anytime soon,

It did become off topic and I do apologize to those you were mislead in reading a thread from "Top Ten Fighters Of All Time" to a thread about books, conspiracy, etc... as I became a part of the cluster. Although it doesn't hurt to maybe turn someone's attention as many times we find some of the most intersting and valuable things where we aren't looking, but I doubt we accomplished that - LOL!

ZiggyDawg: Not including other divisions, where did you place Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Robinson, Moore, Greb, Chavez...? Tommy was exciting and a great fighter, but I just named 7 fighters off the top that most people will rank above him just to make a point. Tommy was great, but not close to top 10! Also, I felt sad to seem him fighting at cruiserweight 5 years ago knowing he has brain damage... How do the people who promote these fights live with themselves.

 

As far as Duran goes He is another one of them guys that stayed to long also. As did Hearns. Going into their fight with each other(1984) Duran was only knocked down twice. Hearns totally dominated Duran with his reach and power. Duran was probally one of  the best lightweights ever.

BigPapa21: I agree about Duran at lightweight. The only positive speculation I say regarding Oscar is at lightweight he was and could have been a pound-for-pound great. That weight with his reach and ability he also had power and his jab was like a half-power punch, thus allowing him to destroy a fighter just with a jab and not even having to use it to open up or distrupt opponents. Oscar moving up carried no power thus allowing fighters to open their offense even more (via Shane Mosley, even though he was offensive and counter-punch oriented, he let his hand fly). That 12lbs gained for Oscar was due to natural size increase and also level of competetion and the money was at Weltereight for him. Oscar fighting Hopkins was a money fight and no chance for Oscar to beat even the defense oriented Hopkins. Hopkins proved no only to be an ageless wonder, but one of the rare fighter to change his style to be much more offensive at the age of 40 (LOL). Hopkins should be mentioned as pound-for-pound as he lost to RJJ in 1993 (Roy was primed and Hopkins wasn't ready, so Hopkins beat him way post RJJ prime), then didn't lose in 26 fights against top opponents. He lost back to back close fights to a super athletic Taylor and Hopkins had trouble making weight at 160lbs. Following that he defeated the best fighters and lost only to the retired undefeated Calzaghe on a split decision. Pavlik (undefeated), Winky, Tarver, Trinidad (undefeated), Oscar, RJJ, Johnson (undefeated),etc... now age 46 and fighting Dawson who a year ago was on the current top 5 pound-for-pound active list.

Martinez is skilled with speed, stamina and a strong chin as of recent. His future will land him in a top 10 for decade and probably better. It's unfortunate to see Paul Williams continue and because of this when Martinez KOd him it will look less impressive for Martinez (statements like Williams was over-the-hill, etc). After losing 12 UD to Quintana the 26yr old Williams won a instant rematch via 1st round TKO. Next another 1st round TKO, followed by an 8th round TKO (while having a severe cut over his eye the during the fight). Winky Wright was next as Williams won 12 UD and winning all rounds on one scorecard and all rounds but one on the other two scorecards. At age 28 fought an even toe-to-toe with Martinez and then a 4th round TD versus Cintron. At 29 he showed no signs of slowing down but was KOd by Martinez in the 2nd round and then won a questionable MD against Lara. Bottom line for now, Williams has proved to be worth in the list, but now by saying Martinez KOd and over-the-hill Williams only hurts Martinez in a true ranking.

Manny, Floyd, Calzaghe, and Hopkins stand-out I feel Amir Khan will be considered among these in time). Winkry Wright is another great standing at a 2nd tier by himself. The 3rd tier you have Paul Williams, Cotto, Mosley (for many). Now Dawson has a fight with Hopkins in a tough spot because lose and he is considered a former decent champion but winning (depends how) it might be said that he should defeat a 46yr old fighter (and many might say that Hopkins is finally over-the-hill {LOL}... if that is possible). The 3rd tier has Juan Manuel Marquez, Rafael Marquez, and his 4 time opponent Israel Vazquez. A fourth tier will show certain fighters with a fan base such as Pavlik, Margarito and Oscar. Oscar's last 14 fights (since 1999) he lost to Trinidad, Mosley (twice), Hopkins (was KOd), Mayweather and Manny (by TKO). Also, the Felix Sturm fight he had taken a physical beating and I feel lost the fight decisively but with a $100 Million PPV even against Hopkins waiting somehow had a magnetic effect in the decision. Some say Oscar has been on the wrong side and deserved decisions such as Trinidad fight, yet many people thought Whitaker and Quartey won or at worst fought a draw.

Roy Jones Jr at his pinnacle I feel was unmatched by anyone. I have this conversation regarding him often. If you had to choose one fighter during their peak that would be the best pound-for-pound, my choice is Roy. At his size he speed an strength in both hands, use to throw four punches in a second using the same hand. After his prime he went to fight for the Heavyweight Championship and won easily (Ruiz was hand picked and perfect for Roy). Unfortunately after being his bigggest he had to lose a lot of weight and most of it muscular density at a late point in his career. You could say he was the fastest heavyweight ever and put Ali second (lol). Roy was many people's favorite. He became a very defensive first orientated fighter later in his career. I remember he TKOd Vinny Pazienza because it was the first time in punch-stat history that a fighter (Vinny) never landed a punch (or jab) during a round. Roy during his prime was the physical specimen many fighters use as the ultimate proto-type for comparison.
