Sports betting laws in Connecticut

Connecticut lawmakers passed legislation in 2017 as part of a larger gaming bill that would allow sports betting once federal laws allowed. This state law became active in May 2018 once PASPA was repealed. Work still had to be done, however, to make sports betting a reality and that did not happen in 2018.

There is hope for 2019, however, as a new sports betting bill — headed by Rep. Joe Verrengia, the chairman of the House Public Safety and Security Committee — has surfaced. The bill looks exciting for sports bettors as it would include the ability for multiple outlets to provide sports betting as well as online wagering with remote registration.

Where can I bet on sports in Connecticut?

Nowhere, just yet. Should the current bill pass, tribal casinos, commercial casinos, off-track betting shops, and the Connecticut lottery would all be authorized to offer sports betting. Online betting would also become a reality.

Online sports betting in Connecticut

If the current bill goes through as written, online sports betting would be allowed in Connecticut. Users would be able to register for accounts remotely and place bets from anywhere within state lines.

Connecticut integrity fees

Connecticut could become the first state to give professional sports leagues the integrity fee that they have been asking for as the current bill includes an integrity fee of 0.25 percent of the handle. It has been reported that a portion of this fee would go to creating a partnership between the leagues and the Connecticut Department of Economic Development.

Connecticut Sportsbooks

There could be a wide variety of sportsbooks in Connecticut if the current bill passes. In addition to online sportsbooks, it is possible that brick-and-mortar sportsbooks appear in tribal casinos, commercial casinos, off-track betting shops and even through the Connecticut Lottery.
