    So I need some advice.

Played a 3 team parlay last night with the Dallas Mavs over & Dallas on the ML +180 (I love ML parlays) & Central Mich -6.5

So, I now have CMU risking 250 to win 2300.

    PARLAY (3 TEAMS)
    [216] CENTRAL MICHIGAN -6½-110
    [709] DAL MAVERICKS o192½-110
    [709] DAL MAVERICKS +180

    250 / 2301
I am thinking about waiting till about game time and seeing if this line runs to 8 (it is now -7) and hedging $1,000 of the bet.

So, what would you guys do?  I really like the Chips in this game, but i don't want to lose out on a chance to lock in $$$.

If you wanted to lock in money, why didnt you just bet Dallas and Dallas over in a parlay?

Then today you could have bet whatever you wanted.

I realize this is a really dumb thought, and I will be ridiculed for suggesting it, but it just seems to me that if you are going to bet a parlay you shouldnt bet games that start on different days because you will be in the position you are in now, and make less money.  But what do I know?

Im sure you will get plenty of smarter advice here.

    Van,

I appreciate the comment but I am not really sure what your point is.  I am not complaining about the position I am in, and i bet the game as i did because i wanted to get CMU at -6.5 and it was there.  Also, when you use a money line in a parlay, the more teams in the parlay really uincreases the payout.

Also, I couldn't just "lock in the money" when I placed the bets, because i didn't know what the final score of the Dallas game would be (now that it is over, it is a 50/50 proposition as to whether or not CMU copvers today).

Finally, all I am looking for is what people would do NOW, not what I might have done yesterday.....

You dumb Notre Dame backers cleaned up.  As did I with the over (for the half and the game.  I expected Hawaii to put up alot more points, but was fine with ND doing it.)  Pushed on two if bets with over and Hawaii.

Listen, all I said in criticism about one guy backing ND was that he was using ND's strength of schedule as his reasoning, which was absurd, as their schedule was a joke.  ND won, big and easy, and I was wrong in my assessment of the game.  But, ND still sucks.

Congrats on your ND win.  However, I am fairly certain your handicapping record is unblemished and you've probably posted a few losers on here as well.

    Bonk,

Im only going to do this once, and this is an effort to help you with the many parlays yet to come - not the one you have today....

If you would have bet a 2 team parlay with Dallas and the Dallas over, and left off the football game, you would be in a position today to bet the football game for as much as you wanted - essentially the same as hedging the parlay you have now - but you wouldnt be paying double vig on the football game.

Read that again.  If you dont understand it, or have the urge to debate it, trust me - you are better off betting this way - it is the same exact bet but for more money.

Congrats on your ND win.  However, I am fairly certain your handicapping record is unblemished and you've probably posted a few losers on here as well.

Had I bet the same $25 on just Dallas +180 and the over, the opportunity would have paid approximately $1,100.  So now i could bet tonights game for the entire $1,100 and have the chance to win $1,000 (at -1 -110)  So, either way I win $2,300 on my parlay or $2,100 with the 2-teamer + the straight bet tonight.  However, as it now stands, I would have to pay $120 to have the line at -6.5. so i do get value playing it the way I did with a better payout AND a better line, PLUS, if I deciede to lock in a priofit and play a middle on - 7 buy buying FAU up to +7.5 or +8, I can.

I can assure you that I do not need any advice from you on how the mechanics of gambling actually work.

The situation is what it is and I put out a friendly posting to see what some people might do.

    Why am I doing this?

Actually, it seems like you might need some help from "someone like me".

Your 2 team parlay would have paid 1,336 (including your original 250 stake).  So your math is wrong.

And if you included the football game in the parlay because you anticipated a line move, a smarter bet would have been a straight bet on CMU -6.5.

Sorry, but you dont know what you are talking about, and while you are not the first here to argue with mathematics and lose - you just joined the illustrious list.

Vanzack.....  thanks.  I appreciate the GL.

You are correct.  Criticizing someone's plays either before or after they are made is a amateurish move and I should have not done that.  I am a big enough man to admit when I made a mistake.  You are correct.

Nice call on ND.  Although I was on the over, I still missed a big opportunity to clean up on ND and I also hammered people who took the Irish and I was dead balls wrong.  Congrats on the nice win.  Next time, try to talk me into it a little more!!!  LOL

Thoughts on CMU tonight?  I am thinking I am just going to let the Chips ride UNLESS the line goes to 7.5 or 8, then I'll buy up an additional point, play the middle and lock in a profit.

Oh, and good luck paying double vig every time you "hedge" in the future on these absurd parlays stretched over days.

So, I now have CMU risking 250 to win 2300.

    PARLAY (3 TEAMS)
    [216] CENTRAL MICHIGAN -6½-110
    [709] DAL MAVERICKS o192½-110
    [709] DAL MAVERICKS +180

    250 / 2301
I am thinking about waiting till about game time and seeing if this line runs to 8 (it is now -7) and hedging $1,000 of the bet.

So, what would you guys do?  I really like the Chips in this game, but i don't want to lose out on a chance to lock in $$$.

    BONK,

As opposed to van, I am a hge fan of parlays with a late final game or a next day final game so I can end up in your situation every time.  I do three teamers in CFB constantly with a PAC 10 final game all year long, and NFL SNF or MNF as a final game the same.

No reason not to put 500 ON FAU.  Guaranteed money is always nice.  Not to mention, if you could get 7.5 obviously the pot is sweetened.  However, if the line doesnt change by game time, hit FAU +7 for 500 and hope for the push on that bet.

    Van...

I JUST ran the EXACT same bet on my book with the Bulls game tonight at +185 (which is a better payout than i got last night.  Perhaps you got a better book, but here is the payout.)

Here is the breakdown on the EXACT SAME BET.

    Dec 26 NBA [501] CHI BULLS o198½-110
    Dec 26 NBA [501] CHI BULLS +185

Risking 250 USD To Win 1110 USD

So I would have $1,110 to play with last night.  If i wanted to bet all that on CMU tonight, I'd win $1,000 = $1,110 + $1,100 = $2,210 which is slightly less than $2301 (not that I give a shit about $100.

Thanks for the effort, bu you're wrong, at least as far as my guy is concerned.  AND, i now have the opportunity to play a middle.

    Sir,

Kindly read what I am about to post:

You are forgetting to add in the 250 of your original stake which would be available to bet on tonights football game - so that makes it approximately 1350.

    Think.

putting $ 250 on a 3 team parlay is almost the same as loosing your wallet with that $ 250 in there and it was found by some kid.  Now that the kid gave you your wallet back and that $ 250 is still in there with an opportunity to turn that $ 250 into $ 2300, why not let it ride.  Of course this is only my personal opinion.  If you don't think CMU will have any chance of winning, I'm pretty sure you would have included in your parlay and throw away the initial $ 250 in the first place.

So you would have 1350 going at -110, which would make you a profit of approx 2,300.

Now - before you say "that is the same as what I made by betting it the way I already did"!!!

    That is true.

But you have a way to "hedge" without paying tax (vig) to do it.

You see, you are giving yourself a chance to pick how much you want to bet on the football game without paying vig twice, which if you hedge in your current situation you are doing.

I am not wrong, I know what I am talkign about, you are arguing with mathematics, please think.

So you would have 1350 going at -110, which would make you a profit of approx 2,300.

Now - before you say "that is the same as what I made by betting it the way I already did"!!!

OK, Van.  Point taken.  ...  so, then I end up in exactly the same spot I am now, with no opportunity to play a middle or to hedge.

If you don't agree with the strategy, no worries.  I wish you luck in your bets.

    Love the anology.

Right now, i am leaning towards letting it ride.  I liked CMU and now the line is moving a bit.  If it goes to 7.5 or (praying) 8, them I will make a big hedge and look for the middle.  If the line stays, I will probably just let it rid and watch the game.

You are in the same position you are now without having to lay vig twice to hedge.

The only "strategy" you are using is to pay too much for the same thing you could be paying less for.

Here is a golden rule - and it cant be argued:

If you are in a position to hedge a parlay, you have already made a fundamental error.

Read it again, think about it, it is mathematics.

Super.  So, $2,300 tonight + $1,110 last night (depending on your payout, mine was $1,100.)  = $2,410.  So we are disagreeing $100.  I really don't care about $50 or $100.  Additionally, if the line runs, I now have a chance to hit a big middle.

Thanks for all the advice, Van.  If you don't like parlays and hedges, that is great for you.  You play your strategies, I'll play mine.
