Preview: Stanford at California

When: 5:30 PM ET, Saturday, November 19, 2016
Where: Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, California

Stanford looks to continue its recent dominance over California on Saturday as the teams meet in Berkeley for the 119th Big Game. The Cardinal have won six in a row against the struggling Golden Bears and head into Saturday’s matchup on a high note after setting a season-high point total in last week’s 52-27 victory over Oregon.

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey’s season has fallen short of expectations due to injury, but the dynamic junior has jump-started the Cardinal offense by rushing for 523 yards during his team’s current three-game winning streak. McCaffrey surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for the second consecutive season last week when he had 218 all-purpose yards against the Ducks. The Cardinal offense also has received a spark from junior quarterback Keller Chryst, who is 3-0 since taking over the starting job and turned in his best performance last week by completing 19-of-26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns in Eugene. Chryst should be in good position to build on those numbers against a Cal team that has lost three in a row by a combined score of 167-72 and must win its final two games to reach six victories and gain bowl eligibility.

ABOUT STANFORD (7-3, 5-3 Pac-12): The Cardinal averaged 20 points a game before erupting for 540 yards of total offense against the Ducks thanks to Chryst’s breakout performance and the duo of McCaffrey and Bryce Love, who have combined for 752 yards rushing in the past three games. Look for another balanced attack in the Big Game against a Cal defense that ranks second-to-last in the FBS against the run, allowing 283.4 yards per game. The Bears boast a strong offense capable of explosive plays but will have to contend with a stellar Stanford frontline led by Solomon Thomas, who has a team-high 46 tackles and seven sacks.

ABOUT CAL (4-6, 2-5): Quarterback Davis Webb is second in the conference in passing yards (360.1) and total offense (350.2) with 33 touchdown passes, but the Bears lack a solid running game and struggled in the red zone in last week’s 56-21 loss at Washington State. The receiving corps includes junior Chad Hansen, who leads the league in receiving with 75 catches for 979 yards and nine touchdowns, along with impressive freshmen Melquise Stovall and Demetris Robinson. The porous defense has allowed an average of 52.6 points over the last five games with several walk-ons pressed into starting duty following a rash of injuries.

1. Stanford leads the all-time series 61-46-11, including 26-21-6 in Berkeley.

2. Cal has won eight of its last 10 home games.

3. McCaffrey (3,434) is 89 yards away from passing Toby Gerhart (3,522) for third on Stanford’s career rushing yards chart.

PREDICTION: Stanford 38, Cal 24
