The WNBA's emphasis on Sunday nights this season benefits all of us tonight, as the Los Angeles Sparks are set to entertain against the Portland Fire as 7.5-point favorites.

My Fire vs. Sparks predictions and these WNBA picks fully expect fireworks at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 7, with Kelsey Plum doing the lighting.

Fire vs Sparks prediction

Fire vs Sparks best bet: Kelsey Plum Over 20.5 points (-125)

Kelsey Plum’s ankle injury may have been to our benefit. After starting the season scoring 25+ in five of six games and averaging 26.8 points, there was worry Plum’s sprained ankle could cost her weeks. Instead, she returned in less than two weeks and scored 27 points on Friday.

Oddsmakers may momentarily doubt her health. There’s no other reason to keep this prop this low. Perhaps 23.5 would be cautious, though 24.5 feels earned.

The Los Angeles Sparks’ superstar’s scoring isn’t dependent on the opponent, but it should relish the Portland Fire’s defense, No. 12 in rating.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Sparks combine the WNBA’s worst defensive rating with the No. 3 pace, making points an absolute necessity.

Fire vs Sparks same-game parlay

When Plum returned to the lineup on Friday, there was some quick laughter the default bet on an Over in a Sparks game returned with her. It should not have been heard as a joke.

In Plum’s seven games, Los Angeles has cashed six Overs. Without her, two Unders cashed in three games.

That is not inherently a criticism of Plum’s defense. It is an acknowledgment of how vital her offense is to the Sparks keeping up with opponents, as they give up open buckets defensively.

With the league’s second-highest opposing assist totals, someone on the Fire should benefit, Carla Leite the leading contender.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
