The Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream clash for the third time this WNBA season, with one major difference: no Caitlin Clark.
Clark is still nursing a quadriceps injury and joins backcourt mate Sophie Cunningham on the sideline, leaving Indiana to depend on smaller reserve guards.
That gives 6-foot-2 Atlanta star guard Rhyne Howard a notable matchup edge, and my Fever vs. Dream predictions like her to fill up the basket tonight.
Here are my best WNBA picks for June 10.
Fever vs Dream predictions
My Fever vs Dream best bet: Rhyne Howard Over 17.5 points (-114 at FanDuel)
Rhyne Howard is taking time to adapt to coach Karl Smesko’s new system, with her production fluctuating on a game-to-game basis.
However, things seem to be settling in, with the Atlanta Dream’s star guard scoring a collective 51 points in the past two outings. Howard is averaging 17.6 points to start the year, and that’s where her total for tonight’s game sits.
She put up 20 and 24 points in the first two meetings against the Indiana Fever in May but could go for even more tonight considering the Fever’s defensive options.
With Clark and Cunningham out, coach Stephanie White had to bring in guard Aari McDonald and bump veteran Sydney Colson to the starting five. Those players stand 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8, respectively, along with starter Kelsey Mitchell at 5-foot-8. That leaves Indiana undersized against Howard's length.
White could go with 6-foot-1 Lexi Hull, but Howard has 20+ pounds on the slender guard. If the Fever opt to stick a bigger forward on Rhyne, she’ll blow past them in the face-up game or lure them to the perimeter.
Player projections have Howard pegged between 15.4 and 17 points, which is way too low considering the defensive gaps on Indiana.
The Fever have been getting roughed up by bigger guards during Clark and Cunningham’s absence, allowing 26 points to Marina Mabrey in a loss to Connecticut, and 13 points in both meetings with Washington’s 6-foot-1 rookie guard Sonja Citron. Even Chicago’s 6-foot-2 reserve guard Rebecca Allen tallied eight points in 15 minutes in Saturday’s blowout.
Howard is by far a more dangerous scorer than those opponents, and she'll have at least 18 points for the Dream tonight.
Will Caitlin Clark play tonight?
Caitlin Clark is very close to returning to action for Indiana and has been working out in practice, but will not suit up against Atlanta on Tuesday night.
Coach Stephanie White told the media Clark hasn’t been fully cleared for basketball activities. Her potential return could be against New York on Saturday.
Fever vs Dream same-game parlay (SGP)
Rhyne Howard has a massive size and strength edge against this depleted Fever backcourt. She dropped 20 and 24 points on them earlier this year with Clark in the lineup.
Natasha Howard will have plenty of rebounding chances with Atlanta shooting a ton of triples. Her player projections are as high as eight boards.
Kelsey Mitchell is taking more 3-pointers with Clark out of the lineup. She’s shot 24 times from distance in the past four games and has made two or more triples in five of her eight games overall.
