Petrino’s quiet three-fight winning streak hasn’t impressed me, and he faces a significant step up against Spivac.

Petrino is the better athlete and more dangerous striker, but Spivac’s wrestling and suffocating top control present a difficult stylistic matchup. Petrino’s losses to Dustin Jacoby and a faded Anthony Smith at light heavyweight are still fresh in my mind, while Spivac recently shut down Ante Delija over three rounds.

Spivac’s size, experience, and grappling are enough for me to pick him over the chronic underachiever Petrino.

Petrino has never been known for his fight IQ or cardio, while Spivac is a capable heavyweight who excels at getting opponents to the mat and wearing them down.

Even at heavyweight, Petrino tends to fade when forced to work, and Spivac’s patient approach should allow him to gradually impose his wrestling. Petrino is durable enough to survive, but once the takedowns begin piling up, I expect his offense to diminish as Spivac controls his way to a decision.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Spivac currently has the highest takedown accuracy among active qualifying UFC heavyweights at 59.3%.

I expect Spivac to avoid Petrino’s early explosiveness, force him to work, and gradually drain his gas tank. Petrino’s 79% takedown defense is formidable, but Spivac is a career heavyweight with excellent wrestling and eight submission victories.

As Petrino slows and the takedowns become easier to secure, Spivac should either find a late submission or control enough of the fight on the mat to earn a decision.

Serghei Spivac vs Vitor Petrino odds

Bet99
Method of Victory Serghei Spivac Vitor Petrino
To win outright +120 -150
To win by KO/TKO +640 +215
To win by decision +375 +270
To win by submission +540 +850
Total rounds Over 1.5
-210
Under 1.5
+160

Odds as of 8-19.

Petrino is a modest -150 favorite, but the Over on 1.5 rounds being heavily favored at -210 supports a more methodical fight than an early heavyweight shootout. Petrino’s power makes him dangerous, but Spivac’s wrestling should become increasingly effective as the fight progresses.

Spivac is slightly taller and longer, but the veteran's most significant advantage comes from logging experience as a career heavyweight and his grappling. Petrino is younger and the more explosive striker, while Spivac’s eight submission victories indicate his likely path to victory coming from his ground game.
